John Horobin was born on 23 April 1779 at Sheen in Staffordshire, the son of William Horobin 1749-1825 and his wife née Ann Mellor, and was baptised there on 9 May 1779 (1).
On 7 January 1805 he married Elizabeth Wilkinson 1785-1865 at Hartington in Derbyshire. She was born in 1785 at Mapleton in Derbyshire, the daughter of Robert and Ann Wilkinson.
They had the following children:
William Horobin. He was born in 1805 and died in the same year.
Thomas Horobin. He was born in 1806. He married Martha (maiden surname unknown). He died on 12 March 1876 aged 70 years and was buried at Earl Sterndale on 15 March 1876, where there is a gravestone inscribed to his memory and that of his wife. She died 22 July 1883 aged 69 years.
William Horobin. He was born in 1808 at Sheen, and died on 12 January 1888 aged 79 years and was buried at Earl Sterndale on 15 January 1888. He married twice. His first wife was Kezia Bagshaw 1817-1852 and they had four children. His second wife was Mary Wild born in 1824 at Fairfield near Buxton in Derbyshire, by whom he had two daughters and a son William Horobin (born in 1862) who married his second cousin once removed Ellen Smith (born in 1870 the daughter of William Smith 1833-1908).
Edward Horobin. He was born in 1811 at Sheen. He married Judith Frogatt, and they had a son Thomas Horobin who was born in 1833 at Sheen, married Sarah Rebecca Dakin, and died on 5 March 1879 at Newton Heath in Manchester.
Robert Horobin. He was born in 1813 at Sheen. On 13 May 1846 he married Susanna Needham at Hartington after banns. She was born in 1826 at Hartington. They farmed at High Needham near Earl Sterndale in Derbyshire, and had the following children, all baptised at Earl Sterndale : Elizabeth Horobin (baptised on 6 June 1847), Mary Horobin (baptised on 9 July 1848) and Charles Horobin (baptised on 24 November 1850). Their father Robert Horobin died in 1851 aged 38 years and was buried at Earl Sterndale on 6 November 1851. His widow Susanna Horobin née Needham died at Handley in Staffordshire in 1857 aged 31 years, and was buried at Earl Sterndale on 31 December 1857.
Elizabeth Horobin. She was born in 1815 at Sheen, and was married to John Ward.
Mary Horobin. She was born in 1817, and was married to Richard Harrison.
Daniel Horobin. He was born in 1820 at Sheen, and died in 1830 at Sparklow.
Isaac Horobin. He was born in 1824 at Sheen. He died in 1847 at Sparklow aged 22 years, and was buried on 1 December 1847 with his parents at Earl Sterndale. There is a gravestone there inscribed to their memory.
Ann Horobin. She was born in 1825 at Sheen, and was married in 1863 to James Brindley 1818-1895. They lived at Nab End in Longnor, Staffordshire. She died on 26 January 1876 at Nab End aged 52 years, and was buried at Earl Sterndale on 31 January 1876. Her husband died on 20 March 1895 at Earl Sterndale aged 77 years, and was buried there on 23 March 1895. There is a gravestone inscribed to their memory in Earl Sterndale churchyard.
Kate Horobin. She was born in 1828 at Earl Sterndale in Derbyshire. On 28 April 1859 she was married to Joseph Housley 1822-1891, the son of George Housely of Monyash in Derbyshire. They kept the Gibraltar Inn, Grimshaw Lane at Newton Heath, now called The Kippax. They had four children. Kate Housley née Horobin died on 15 February 1895 at Newton Heath in Manchester aged 67 years, and was buried in Philips Park Cemetery in Manchester where there is a gravestone inscribed to her memory and that of her husband.
Hannah Horobin. She was born in 1830 at Sparklow, and was married to Michael Frost.
Their father John Horobin died on 18 October 1845 aged 66 years at Sparklow in Hartington Middle Quarter parish, and was buried at Earl Sterndale on 22 October 1845.
His widow Elizabeth Horobin née Wilkinson died on 7 January 1865 aged 80 years at Newton Heath, the home of her daughter Kate Housley née Horobin. She was buried at Earl Sterndale on 12 January 1865, where there is a gravestone inscribed to her memory and that of her husband.
(1) In his father's Will he was bequeathed "all that Parcel of Land at Hurdlow both the old and new inclosures in the Parish of Hartington". He was also to share with his brothers Benjamin Horobin, Thomas Horobin and Daniel Horobin the residue of their father's cash, bills and book debts and the residue of his farming stock, implements of husbandry, and household furniture, all to be equally divided between them.
