William Smith was born in 1833 at Longnor in Staffordshire, the son of George Smith 1805-1891 of Longnor and his wife née Ann Horobin 1808-1897.
In 1851 he was living at home with his parents at Dog Lane in Longnor, and was recorded as a wheelwright in 1861, carpenter in 1871 and joiner in 1881.
He married Mary Harrison in 1861. She was born in Longnor in 1835.
They lived in Back Street in Longnor, and in 1891 he was living in Church Street, Longnor.
They had the following children (all born in Longnor):
Ann Smith. She was born in 1862. When the 1881 Census was taken she was housekeeper for her widowed father.
Mary Jane Smith. She was born in 1866, and died in 1868 aged two years.
Ellen Smith. She was born in 1870. When the Census was taken in 1891 and 1901 she was housekeeper for her widowed father. In 1904 she was married to William Horobin (born 1862) the son of William Horobin 1808-1888 and his wife née Mary Wild of the Royal Oak Inn at Sparklow (near the former Hurdlow railway station) in the parish of Hartington Middle Quarter in Derbyshire (1).
Their father William Smith died in 1908 aged 75 years.
His wife Mary Smith née Harrison had predeceased him in 1877 aged 42 years.
(1) He married his second cousin once removed (her grandmother Ann Horobin 1808-1897 was the first cousin of his father William Horobin 1808-1888), and was also the brother of Sarah Ann Horobin 1860-1939 (who married Samuel Hallowes) the ancestor of Jean Durbin in Australia, who kindly provided much information on the Horobin family.
