His life and books

Ellen Wright 1834-1904

Ellen Wright was born in Bradbourne in 1834, the daughter of William Wright 1796-1882 and his wife née Elizabeth Gould 1802-1843.

When the Census was taken in 1851 she was at home with her parents in Bradbourne. In 1861 she was with her aunt Ellen Gould at Betley in Staffordshire (1).

She married Gilbert Gould 1821-1891 of Pilsbury Grange, the son of Edmund Gould 1782-1833 and his wife née Margaret Peake 1783-1844.

They had the following children:

Ellen Elizabeth Gould. She was born on 1 June 1863 and baptised at Hartington on 20 August 1863. She married Clifford Burnett 1859-1936.

Gilbert Gould. He was born on 25 October 1864 and baptised at Hartington on 14 December 1864.

William Henry Gould. He was born on 16 November 1866 and baptised at Hartington on 5 December 1866. He died in 1947.

Their mother Ellen Gould née Wright died aged 70 years on 9 August 1904, and was buried at Hartington on 12 August 1904 (2).

Her husband Gilbert Gould had predeceased her in 1891.

(1) Although in Staffordshire, Betley is near the Cheshire border. Miss Ellen Gould was then 85 years of age and born at Hanson Grange. Presumably she was the daughter of Thomas Gould 1714-1794 of Hanson Grange in Derbyshire. With them in 1861 was a housemaid born at Barthomley nearby in Cheshire. There was a long standing connection of the Gould family with the Barthomley area.
(2) According to the Hartington burial register she was then living at Drystone Edge, Quarnford in Staffordshire.
