Joshua Phillips was born in 1817, the son of John Phillips 1782-1852 of Warslow in Staffordshire and his wife née Jane Berrisford 1789-1860. He was baptised at Warslow on 30 November 1817.
He married Sarah Hope on 25 October 1841 at Alstonefield in Staffordshire, and had the following children, all born at Warslow:
John Phillips. He was born in 1842, and baptised at Warslow on 24 April 1842. He lived with his grandparents John and Elizabeth Hope of Gap Farm in Warslow, which he had inherited by 1881. He married Sarah Sutton in 1871, and they had ten children. He died in 1920 aged 77 years.
Joseph Phillips. He was born in 1844, and baptised at Warslow on 25 February 1844. He became a lead miner locally, and later a coal miner in Nottinghamshire He died in
James Phillips. He was born in 1846, and baptised at Warslow on 19 July 1846. He became a tailor. He married Eliza Cotton in 1871 at Leek in Staffordshire. She was born in 1852 at Repton in Derbyshire. They had ten children. He died in 1916 aged 70 years.
William Phillips. He was born in 1849, and baptised at Warslow on 8 April 1849. He became a lead miner. In 1901 and 1911 he was unmarried and living with his brother Alfred Phillips in Huthwaite in Nottinghamshire. He was a coal miner.
Thomas Phillips. He was born in 1852.
Alfred Phillips. He was born in 1854. In 1894 he married Eliza Annie Ellis 1872-1937 born in Huthwaite in Nottinghamshire, and had become a coal miner there. In 1901 they were living at Newcastle Street in Huthwaite. With Alfred Herbert Phillips, his wife and family of five children was his unmarried brother William Phillips (born in 1852 at Warslow) and his unmarried nephew Albert Phillips (born in 1874 at Skinningrove in Yorkshire), also coal miners.
Jane Elizabeth Phillips. She was born in 1857, and baptised at Warslow on 3 May 1857.
Anna Maria Phillips. She was born in 1859, and baptised at Warslow on 28 August 1859. She died in 1861 aged two years and was buried at Warslow on 23 June 1861.
Martha Ellen Phillips. She was born in 1864, and baptised at Warslow on 13 November 1864. When the Census was taken in 1881 she was aged sixteen living with her mother in Warslow and employed as a domestic servant.
Their father Joshua Phillips was employed as a lead and copper miner when the Census was taken in 1851, and as a lead miner in 1861. However by 1871 he was boarding in the household of railway engine driver William Chappell and his family at 2 Street Cottages, Macclesfield New Road in Buxton, Derbyshire. Joshua Phillips was then working as a labourer at the local lime works.
When the 1881 Census was taken, he was lodging in the home of his brother John Phillips at Midland Terrace, Fairfield in Buxton, and was then employed as a general labourer. His wife stayed at home in Warslow when her husband was working away in Buxton.
Joshua Phillips died in 1888, and his wife Sarah Phillips née Hope died in the same year.
