John Phillips was born in 1782, the son of Ralph Phillips (born in 1741) and his wife née Ann Birch (born in 1741).

He married Jane Berrisford 1789-1860.

They had the following children, all born at Warslow in Staffordshire:

Eleanor Phillips. She was born in 1803. She was married to Sampson Sutton 1804-1874, and they lived in Warslow. He was the son of Stephen and Elizabeth Sutton, and was baptised at Warslow on 22 April 1804. Elizabeth Sutton née Phillips died in 1884.

John Phillips. He was born in 1806. He married Mary Frost 1810-1890, and they had the following five children: Alfred Phillips 1833-1922 (he married Ann Trueman 1838-1905), John Phillips (born in 1838), William Francis Phillips 1842-1928, Joseph Phillips (born in 1847), and Thomas Frost Phillips 1850-1910 (he married Ellen Carey 1851-1883). Their father John Phillips died in 1891.

Joseph Phillips. He was born in 1816, and baptised at Warslow on 11 February 1816. When the 1851 Census was taken he was employed as a lead miner, but in 1861 he was a stone mason's labourer. In 1881 he was recorded as being an agricultural labourer living with his widowed sister Eleanor Sutton in Warslow. When the 1891 Census was taken he was a labourer in a lead mine and living as a pauper inmate in the Workhouse at Leek in Staffordshire. He was unmarried, and died at Leek in 1893.

Joshua Phillips. He was born in 1817, and baptised at Warslow on 30 November 1817. He married Sarah Hope in 1841, and they had seven children. He was a lead miner, and died in 1888.

Their father John Phillips died in 1852.
