John Phillips was born in 1806 at Wetton in Staffordshire, the son of John Phillips 1782-1852 of Warslow in Staffordshire and his wife née Jane Berrisford 1789-1860. He was baptised at Warslow on 26 October 1806.

On 13 August 1829 he married Mary Frost 1810-1890, born at Fawfieldhead in Alstonefield parish, Staffordshire. When the 1861 Census was taken he was recorded as being a lead miner and they were living at Shaw Crofts in Warslow. However by 1881 he and his wife and son Alfred Phillips had moved to Midland Terrace, Fairfield, Buxton in Derbyshire, where John Phillips was employed as a general labourer. Also with them was his brother Joshua Phillips, also working as a general labourer. In 1891 the recently widowed John Phillips was living at 21 Market Street in Buxton with his son Joseph Phillips and his family.

They had the following children:

Alfred Phillips. He was born in 1832 in Warslow, and baptised there on 13 July 1832. When the 1881 Census was taken he was living with his parents at Midland Terrace, Fairfield in Buxton, and was employed as a stationary engine driver. He married Ann Trueman 1838-1905 on 3 November 1859 at Alstonefield in Staffordshire, and died on 12 December 1922 at Warslow.

John Phillips. He was born in 1837 in Warslow, and baptised there on 8 October 1837. He married Ann Rushton (born in 1841) at Alton in Staffordshire on 2 July 1860, and they had a son William Francis Phillips born at Cauldon in 1860 and baptised at Alton on 23 September 1860. When the 1861 Census was taken John Phillips was a lead miner.

Jane Phillips. She was born in 1839 in Warslow.

Mary Phillips. She was born in 1840 in Warslow.

William Francis Phillips. He was born in 1842 in Warslow, and baptised there on 2 May 1847. When the 1861 Census was taken he was a lead miner. On 10 October 1870 he married Elizabeth Jane Moreland 1846-1932 at Chesterfield in Derbyshire, and they emigrated to New Zealand in 1874. He died on 2 December 1928.

Joseph Phillips. He was born in 1847 at Wetton in Staffordshire. When the 1861 Census was taken he was a lead miner. In 1874 he married Susannah Colburn 1853-1917, and they had six children. They had moved to Buxton by 1881, where he worked for the local gas works as a meter inspector. He died in 1916 aged 68 years.

Thomas Frost Phillips. He was born in 1850 at Wetton, and baptised there on 29 December 1850. He married Ellen Carey 1851-1883 at Guisborough in Yorkshire in 1874, and died in 1910 in the Northallerton district in Yorkshire.

Their father John Phillips died in 1891.
