Alfred Phillips was born in 1832 at Warslow in Staffordshire, the son of John Phillips 1806-1891 and his wife née Mary Frost 1810-1890. He was baptised at Warslow on 13 July 1832.

When the Census was taken in 1851 he was a lead and copper miner living at home with his parents.

He married Ann Trueman 1838-1905 on 3 November 1859 at Alstonefield in Staffordshire. By 1861 he was an engine driver, living at Hall Cliffe in Warslow with his wife and his sister Lavinia Phillips in the household of his grandmother-in-law the widowed Jane Shenton (born in 1783).

When the 1881 Census was taken he was living with his parents at Midland Terrace, Fairfield in Buxton, and was employed as a stationary engine driver. In 1891 he was back at Hall Cliffe with his wife and daughter Mary Ann Phillips, who had been born in Buxton, and was there also in 1901 with his wife and unmarried son Frederick Phillips, working as a general labourer on the roads. In 1911 he was still at Hall Cliffe, by then a "pensioned engine tenter" and a widower his wife having died in 1905; with him still was his unmarried son Frederick Phillips, by then a farm labourer.

They had the following children:

Lavinia Phillips. She was born in 1860 in Warslow, and baptised there on 30 September 1860.

Frederick Phillips. He was born in 1863 in Warslow. In 1901 he was single and living with his parents at Hall Cliffe in Warslow, working as a navvy. he was still there, by then a farm labourer and living with his widowed father.

Walter Henry Phillips. He was born on 13 August 1865 in Warslow, and baptised there in 1865. He married Ellen Phillips 1868-1902, the daughter of William Phillips 1815-1873 and his wife nee Hannah Phillips 1823-1888 of Clough Head in Warslow.

John William Phillips 1867-1926. He was born on 1 July 1867 in Warslow, and baptised there on 29 September 1867. He married Edith Berrisford 1871-1933, and died on 21 September 1926.

Alfred Herbert Phillips. He was born in 1870 in Warslow, and baptised there in that year. When the Census was taken in 1891 he was working as a farm servant for Thomas Mitchel farming at Field House, Fawfieldhead in Alstonefield parish, Staffordshire.

Ralph Trueman Phillips. He was born in 1874 in Warslow, and baptised there in that year. He married Sarah Jane Billingham in 1904 and they lived at Stanton-in-the-Peak near Bakewell in Derbyshire. He died on 25 July 1942 at Stanton-in-the-Peak, his wife having predeceased him on 16 December 1918.

Mary Ann Phillips. She was born in 1877 in Buxton, Derbyshire, and baptised at Warslow on 1 July 1877.

Thomas Lemuel Phillips. He was born in 1880 in Warslow, and baptised there in that year. He died in 1889.

Their mother Ann Phillips née Trueman died in 1905.

Their father Alfred Phillips died on 12 December 1922 at Warslow.
