James Phillips was born in 1846, the son of Joshua Phillips 1817-1888 of Warslow in Staffordshire and his wife née Sarah Hope 1823-1888. He was baptised at Warslow on 25 February 1844. His father was a lead and copper miner.

When the Census was taken in 1861 and 1871 he living with in Warslow his parents, and working as a lead miner.

In 1871 he married Eliza Cotton, born in 1852 at Repton in Derbyshire, the daughter of John and Eliza Cotton.

James Phillips became a tailor's foreman cutter, and by 1911 a tailor on his own account and an employer.

By 1881 James Phillips and his family were living at Slaney Street in Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, but later moved to nearby Tunstall in Staffordshire. When the 1891 Census was taken they were at 12 Cooper Street in Tunstall, and in 1901 and 1911 at 32 Stanley Street in Tunstall.

They had the following children:

James John Phillips. He was born in 1873 at Leek in Staffordshire. He died in 1893 aged twenty.

Charles William Phillips. He was born in 1874 at Leek. He became a potter's presser.

Edwin Cotton Phillips. He was born in 1875 at Leek. He died in 1893 aged eighteen.

Samuel Arthur Phillips. He was born in 1877 at Leek. He became an apprentice potter's mechanic and later a blacksmith.

George Henry Phillips. He was born in 1879 at Leek. He became an assistant in a shoe shop and later a tailor.

Richard Walter Rowland Phillips. He was born in 1880 at Leek. He became a baker and confectioner.

Joseph Vincent Phillips. He was born in 1881 at Tunstall. He became a schoolmaster.

Ann Elizabeth Phillips. She was born in 1884 at Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire. She became a sewing machinist in tailoring.

Percy Harold Phillips. He was born in 1894 at Tunstall. He became a clerk with a pottery manfacturer.

Ernest Clifford Phillips. He was born in 1895 at Tunstall. He became an engraver on copper in the pottery trade.

Their father James Phillips died at Macclesfield in 1916 aged 70 years.

His widow Eliza Phillips nee Cotton died at Stoke-on-Trent in 1926 aged 73 years.
