Alfred Phillips was born in 1854, the son of Joshua Phillips 1817-1888 of Warslow in Staffordshire and his wife née Sarah Hope 1823-1888. His father was a lead and copper miner.
He became a coal miner at Huthwaite. Before 1907 the village was known as Hucknall-under-Huthwaite and also Dirty Hucknall. It lies west of Mansfield, close to the Derbyshire border. In 1901 he and his wife and family were living at Newcastle Street in Huthwaite, together with his unmarried brother William Phillips and his unmarried nephew Albert Phillips (born in 1874). Both were also coal miners, William Phillips employed below ground as a roadman and Albert Phillips on the surface. When the Census was taken in 1911 Alfred Phillips was still living at Huthwaite with his wife and family and brother William Phillips. Both brothers were still working as coal miners.
In 1894 he married Eliza Annie Ellis 1872-1937 born in Huthwaite in Nottinghamshire, and had become a coal miner there. Before 1907 the village was known as Hucknall-under-Huthwaite and also Dirty Hucknall. It lies west of Mansfield, close to the Derbyshire border.
In 1901 they were living at Newcastle Street in Huthwaite. Also with Alfred Herbert Phillips, his wife and family of five children was his unmarried brother William Phillips (born in 1852 at Warslow) and his unmarried nephew Albert Phillips (born in 1874 at Skinningrove in Yorkshire). Both were also coal miners, William Phillips employed below ground as a roadman and Albert Phillips on the surface.
