John Phillips was born in 1842, the son of Joshua Phillips 1817-1888 of Warslow in Staffordshire and his wife née Sarah Hope 1823-1888. He was baptised at Warslow on 24 April 1842.

He lived with his grandparents John and Elizabeth Hope of Gap Farm in Warslow, which he had inherited by 1881.

In 1871 he married Sarah Sutton, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Hope of Warslow, and had the following children, all born at Warslow:

Elizabeth Anne Phillips. She was born in 1872, and was baptised at Warslow on 11 August 1872.

John Hope Phillips. He was born in 1874, and was baptised in that year at Warslow. He died in the same year.

William Thomas Hope Phillips. He was born in 1875, and was baptised in that year at Warslow. He became a carter. In 1911 he and his wife Charlotte (whom he married in 1901) were living at 3 Byron Street in Buxton, Derbyshire. They had six children, all born in Buxton, of whom five were living and one dead by 1911. Their father William Thomas H Phillips died in 1955 aged 80 years.

Alfred Phillips. He was born in 1877, and was baptised on 21 May 1877 at Warslow. He married Louisa Robinson in 1907, and theu had two children: Findern Phillips (born in 1909) and Freda Phillips (born in 1911). He died in 1920.

George Sutton Phillips. He was born in 1879. In 1901 he was a shoe maker living unmarried with his parents. He married Adelina Johnson 1875-1970, and they had a son William Phillips 1905-1994 and daughter Annie Phillips 1908-1909. William Phillips married Florence Ada Nixon 1914-1990. George Sutton Phillips died in 1916.

John Phillips. He was born in 1882, and was baptised on 15 February 1882 at Warslow. In 1901 he was an agricultural labourer living unmarried with his parents.

Edna Phillips. She was born in 1884, and was baptised on 11 May 1884 at Warslow.

James Phillips. He was born in 1886, and was baptised at Warslow in that year. In 1901 he was a farm servant living unmarried with his parents. When the 1911 Census was taken he was still unmarried and working with his parents on the family farm.

Hannah Phillips. She was born in 1887. In 1911 she was single aged 23 and working as a dairy maid on the family farm.

Sarah Hannah Phillips. She was born in 1888, and was baptised at Warslow on 20 May 1888.

Joseph Phillips. He was born in 1891.

John Phillips died in 1920 aged 77 years.

His widow Sarah Phillips née Sutton died in 1925 aged 79 years.
