Ralph Wooddisse 1807-1850

Ralph Wooddisse was born in 1807 at Alstonefield in Staffordshire, the son of Ralph Wooddisse 1780-1855 and his wife née Hannah Bagshaw 1783-1842.

He married Elizabeth Beardmore 1811-1890 in 1838. She was born on 26 November 1811 at Wetton in Staffordshire, the daughter of George Beardmore 1778-1859 the Wetton blacksmith and his wife née Elizabeth Elliot 1782-1870.

When the Census was taken in 1841 they were living in Alstonefield, together with their infant son Thomas Wooddisse.

They had the following children, all born in Alstonefield:

Thomas Edward Wooddisse. He was born in 1839. In 1861 and 1871 he was a joiner and carpenter living unmarried at home with his widowed mother and her other children.

Ralph Wooddisse. He was born in 1841. By 1871 he was unmarried and was farming 111 acres at Bradbourne in Derbyshire. With him was his sister Hannah Wooddisse. He married Lydia Buxton, and farmed at Ash in Etwall, Derbyshire. He died there in 1925.

George Wooddisse. He was born on 23 April 1843, and became a stone mason. On 29 December 1866 he married Jane Finney 1850-1891 at Toxteth Park in Liverpool. She was born in 1850 in Alstonefield parish, the daughter of farmer William Finney. He died in 1922, and was buried at Alstonefield, where there is a monumental inscription to his memory.

John Wooddisse. He was born in 1845, and died in 1911. When the Census was taken in 1871 he was unmarried and living with his mother and employed as a druggist.

Hannah Wooddisse. She was born in 1847. By 1871 she was still unmarried and was with her brother Ralph Wooddisse who was then farming 111 acres at Clapp Gate farm, Bradbourne in Derbyshire.

Edward Wooddisse. He was born in 1850. When the Census was taken in 1871 he was unmarried and living with his mother and employed as a joiner. By 1881 he was farming 268 acres at Minninglow in Derbyshire, employing two men and a boy.
He was unmarried and his widowed mother was there with him.

Their father Ralph Wooddisse died on 17 December 1850 aged 43 years, and was buried at Alstonefield.

Following the death of her husband Ralph Wooddisse, his widow Elizabeth Wooddisse née Beardmore continued living with her children in Alstonefield village. In the 1861 Census she is recorded as being a farmer of 25 acres and also a joiner and carpenter, and employing a female domestic servant.
By 1871 she was farming 37 acres and employing a master joiner and nine men.

Elizabeth Wooddisse née Beardmore died on 5 May 1890, and was buried with her husband at Alstonefield, where there is a monumental inscription to their memory.
