George Berisford 1823-1895

George Berisford was born at Alstonefield in Staffordshire, the son of Isaac Berisford and his wife nee Hannah Heathcote.
He was baptised at Alstonefield on 30 March 1823.

Narrowdale

In 1841 he was aged fifteen living at home with his parents at Archford Moor in Alstonefield parish. He became a shoemaker.

He married Sarah Howard of Hartington in Derbyshire on 26 August 1847 at Hartington. She was the daughter of Charles Howard of Hartington and his wife nee Sarah Sutton born in 1826.

In 1851 he was living in Hartington with his wife Sarah and their three eldest children.

However when the 1861 Census was taken the family had moved to Narrowdale in Alstonefield parish, where he and his wife lived for the rest of their lives.

They had the following children, all baptised at Hartington:

Mahala Berisford. She was born in Hartington and baptised there on 10 October 1847. She was married to Frank Austin at Hartington on 26 December 1871 (1)

Isaac Berisford. He was born in Hartington on 16 January 1849 and baptised on 2 February 1849. He married Olive Beresford on 27 January 1873 at Alstonefield. He died in 1897 aged 48 years.

Hannah Berisford. She was born in Hartington and baptised there on 31 March 1851.

John Berisford. He was baptised on 10 March 1853. He died aged only eleven days, and was buried at Hartington on 15 March 1853 (2).

George Berisford. He was born in Hartington and baptised there on 11 August 1854.

Samuel Berisford. He was born at Narrowdale in Alstonefield in 1857.

Joseph Berisford. He was born at Narrowdale in Alstonefield in 1860.

Sarah Berisford. She was born at Narrowdale in Alstonefield in 1863.

Their father George Berisford died on 2 July 1895 aged 71 years. He was buried at Alstonefield where there is a gravestone inscribed to his memory and that of his wife.
His wife Sarah Berisford had predeceased him on 13 May 1874 aged 48 years. She was buried at Alstonefield.

(1) The entry in the Hartington marriage register wrongly records her as Matilda Berisford, but correctly names her as being the daughter of George Berisford the shoemaker. The witnesses were Isaac Berisford (probably her brother) and Ann Berisford (probably her grandmother).
(2) His age is recorded in the Hartington parish register.
