Samuel Berisford 1857-1931

Samuel Berisford was born in 1857 at Narrowdale in Alstonefield parish in Staffordshire, the son of George Berisford and his wife nee Sarah Howard. His father was a shoemaker.

In 1871 Samuel Berisford was working aged fifteen for John Adams at Alstonefield, on a farm of 104 acres. When the 1881 Census was taken he was working as a farm servant for James Smith of Burton Moor in Bakewell, Derbyshire on a farm of 132 acres.

He married Matilda Austin in 1888 at the Registry Office at Ashbourne in Derbyshire. She was a widow nee Matilda Allen born at Alstonefield in 1850, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Allen of Alstonefield. She had been married to Thomas Austin at Ashbourne in 1876 but was widowed between 1878 and 1881. She had a son James Austin born at Alstonefield in 1879.

In 1891 Samuel Berisford and his wife were living in Church Street, Alstonefield. He was then employed as a farm labourer. However when the 1901 Census was taken they had moved to King Street in Ashbourne. By 1911 they had moved to St. John's Street in Ashbourne. Samuel Berisford was by then working as a builder's labourer.

The family used the variant Beresford as their surname.

Samuel and Matilda Berisford had the following children:

Isaac Beresford. He was born in 1894 at Hatton in Derbyshire.

Their father died at Ashbourne in 1931 aged 74 years.
His wife Matilda died there in 1926 aged 76 years.
