Matilda Allen 1850-1926

Matilda Allen was born in 1850 at Alstonefield in Staffordshire, the daughter of Joseph Allen (born in Alstonefield in 1813) and his wife nee Mary Bennet (born at Biggin Moor in Derbyshire in 1813). T

In 1871 Matilda Allen aged 22 years was working as a general servant for William Goodwin at Little Park, Okeover in Staffordshire.

She was married in 1876 to Thomas Austin at Ashbourne church. They had a son James Austin born at Alstonefield in 1879. However by 1881 Thomas Austin had died, and his widow Matilda Austin and their son were living at Alstonefield with Joseph and Mary Allen. Matilda was then employed as a domestic servant.

In 1888 she was married to Samuel Berisford at Ashbourne Registry Office. He was born in 1857 at Narrowdale in Alstonefield parish in Staffordshire, the son of George Berisford and his wife nee Sarah Howard.

St John's Street in Ashbourne

When the 1891 Census was taken Samuel Berisford and his wife were living in Church Street, Alstonefield. He was employed as a farm labourer. However when the 1901 Census was taken they had moved to King Street in Ashbourne. By 1911 they had moved to St. John's Street in Ashbourne. Samuel Berisford was by then working as a builder's labourer.

The family used the variant Beresford as their surname.

Samuel and Matilda Berisford had the following children:

George Beresford. He was born in 1890 at Alstonefield.

Isaac Beresford. He was born in 1894 at Hatton in Derbyshire.

Their mother Matilda Beresford died at Ashbourne in 1926 aged 76 years.
Her husband Samuel Beresford died there in 1931 aged 74 years.
