Nat Gould

Charles Howard 1803-1869

Charles Howard was born in 1803 at Fawfieldhead in Alstonefield parish in Staffordshire.

He married Sarah Sutton at Hartington in Derbyshire on 31 May 1824.

By 1851 he had become a farmer of four acres and a butter factor in Hartington. In 1861 however he was recorded as a farm labourer, living in Hartington Dale. Living with his family then were his grandson William Howard aged five, his granddaughter Elizabeth Critchlow aged three (born in Manchester), and his nephew Joshua Watts aged five months (born in Hartington).

He and his wife had the following children, all baptised at Hartington::

Joseph Howard. He was baptised on 7 November 1824. He died in 1828 aged only three years, and was buried at Hartington on 30 March 1828.

Sarah Howard 1826-1874. She was baptised on 26 November 1826. She was married to George Berisford 1823-1895 in 1847 and they had a family.

Hannah Howard. She was baptised on 11 February 1829. She had a son William Howard, who was baptised at Hartington on 22 August 1848. In 1851 William Howard aged two was being brought up by his grandparents at Hartington.

Elizabeth Howard. She was baptised on 2 May 1830.

Esther Howard. She was baptised on 13 May 1832.

Charles Howard. He was baptised on 26 June 1834. In 1851 the Census Return recorded him as being a shoemaker aged seventeen, but in 1861 he was listed as a "musicianer". He was living at home with his parents in 1871 as a musician, and by 1881 was recorded as being a Professor of Music and unmarried. He died in 1886 aged 50 years, and was buried at Hartington on 26 May 1886.

Ann Howard. She was baptised on 23 April 1837. She died aged only six years, and was buried at Hartington on 30 December 1842.

Mary Ann Howard. She was baptised on 14 June 1840. She died aged only nine weeks old, and was buried at Hartington on 7 August 1840.

Robert Howard. He was baptised on 4 November 1841.

Ann Howard. She was baptised on 12 May 1844. She had a daughter Hannah Howard, baptised at Hartington on 13 November 1863.

Their father Charles Howard died on 30 January 1869 aged 66 years, and was buried at Hartington.
His widow Sarah Howard died on 9 June 1876 aged 73 years, and was also buried at Hartington, where there is a monumental inscription to their memory (1).

(1) Also buried there with them is their grandson Joshua Howard, who died on 14 February 1872. The gravestone records his age as being eleven years, but the register gives his age as twelve years. The birth of Joshua Watts Howard was registered in the fourth quarter of 1860 at Ashbourne District Registry. He was apparently baptised at Hartington, but his baptism in the parish church there is not recorded in the register.
