Richard Gould was born in 1747, the son of Thomas Gould 1717-1764 of Dowall near Crowdecote in Derbyshire and his wife nee Elizabeth Melland of High Needham in Derbyshire. He was baptised at Hartington on 18 June 1747.

On 17 September 1767 at Hope he married Elzabeth Bagshaw 1740-1812, daughter of Thomas Bagshaw of Abney Grange in Derbyshire. They had the following children, all baptised at Hope:

Micah Gould 1768-1837. He was baptised on 22 June 1768, and buried at Hope on 16 October 1737.

Amy Gould 1771-1774. Baptised on 10 November 1771, she was buried at Hope on 17 February 1774.

Thomas Gould 1774-1832. He was baptised on 13 July 1774, and buried at Hope in 1832.

Esther Gould 1777-1781. She was baptised on 7 April 1777, and buried at Hope on 1 April 1781.

Isaac Gould 1780-1781, He was baptised on 5 January 1780, and buried at Hope on 8 February 1781.

Elizabeth Melland Gould 1784-1867. She was born in 1784, and baptised on 9 January 1785. She was married to Robert Kay was born in 1788 at Worral near Sheffield in Yorkshire. They had two daughters: Elizabeth Kay (born 1817) and Mary Kay (born 1820). Their mother Elizabeth Melland Kay died in 1867 aged 82 years.

William Melland Gould 1787-1845. Baptised on 21 October 1787, he married Ann Wragg 1791-1853. They had four sons and four daughters. He died in 1845, and was buried at Hope on 5 January 1876.

Their father Richard Gould died in 1822 aged 71, and was buried at Hope where there is a grave monument in the churchyard.
His wife Elizabeth Gould nee Bagshaw died in 1812, and was buried at Hope on 3 May in that year.
