William Melland Gould was born in 1787 at Hope in Derbyshire, the son of Richard Gould 1747-1822 and his wife nee Elizabeth Bagshaw. He was baptised at Hope church on 27 September 1818.
He was a farmer of 22 acres and lived at Hope. On 21 June 1813 at Hope parish church he married Ann Wragg 1791-1853 of Bradfield in Yorkshire, also known as Nanny Wragg. They had the following children, all born at Hope:
Samuel Gould 1813-1845. He married Mary Jennings of Hazlebadge on 12 July 1841. They had a son Lemuel Gould (born 1843) and a daughter Sarah Ann (born 1845).
Matthew Gould 1816-1881. He took over the family farm when his father died in 1846.
William Gould 1818-1825.
Elizabeth Wragg Gould 1821-1881. She married to George Graham 1822-1909, and they had five sons and three daughters.
Maria Gould 1823-1874.
Richard Gould. Born in 1826, he was not living with the family when the 1841 Census was taken, but elsewhere in Hope in the household of farmer Jonathan Longden, working as a male servant aged 14 years. Sadly he died eight years later aged only 23 years, and was buried in Hope on 2 September 1849.
Esther Gould 1829-1892. She was married to Joseph Hall 1830-1892. He was the blacksmith of Bradwell near Hope in Derbyshire.
Matilda Mary Gould 1836-1893. She seems to have been unmarried. In 1891 she was visiting her sister Esther and her husband Joseph Hall. She was then a dressmaker. She died in 1893 aged 57 years.
Their father died in 1845, and was buried in Hope churchyard on 2 January 1846 aged 58 years.
His widow continued on the farm with her son Matthew, and died seven years later.
