Elizabeth Melland Gould was born in 1784, the daughter of Richard Gould 1747-1822 of Hope in Derbyshire and his wife nee Elizabeth Bagshaw 1740-1812. She was baptised at Hope on 9 January 1785. However she would not have been rushed into a cold parish church to be christened in a Derbyshire midwinter, and can safely be presumed to have been born in the previous year.
On 17 September 1767 at Hope she was married to Robert Kay, born in 1788 at Worrall near Sheffield in Yorkshire. He became a farmer of 20 acres in Hope. She died in 1867 aged 82 years. They had the following children:
Elizabeth Kay. Born at Hope in 1817, she was married there to Joseph Bradbury 1812-1901 on 3 November 1842. They had five sons and six daughters.
Mary Kay. She was born at Hope in 1820, and was married at Hope on 3 December 1855 to Levi Hadfield. They had a son George Hadfield 1856-1908.
