In the early twentieth century an egg market was held in Alstonefield village every Wednesday. The egg factor came by train to Alsop-en-le-Dale Station from where a horse and cart carried him and his egg packing cases to Alstonefield village where people waited with baskets of eggs. They would have written their name on one egg on top of each basket.
Egg sellers in Milldale counted their eggs on the previous night, and schoolchildren left them with Mrs Jane Askey until their dinner hour. They then collected them and took them to the egg market, where they were paid for them. Then they took the money back to Mrs Askey for safe keeping, and collected it on their way back home from school (3).
Jane Askey died on 27 June 1919 aged 77 years, and was buried at Alstonefield.
Her husband William Askey 1844-1917 had predeceased her on 15 March 1917. There is a fine gravestone inscribed to their memory in Alstonefield churchyard.
