Thomas Askey 1868-1952

Thomas Askey was born in 1868 at Milldale near Alstonefield in Staffordshire, the son of William Askey 1844-1917 and his wife nee Jane Berisford 1841-1919. He was baptised on 19 January 1868 at Alstonefield.

In 1881 he was working aged thirteen as an indoor farm servant for William Finney of Under Wetton Farm in Wetton, Staffordshire.

He married Eliza Hill in 1893. She was born in 1870 at Woodeaves, Tissington in Derbyshire, the daughter of John Hill and his wife nee Mercy Duffield.

When the 1901 Census was taken he was working as a coal carter and living with his wife and son Ernest Askey at 17 Grin Row, Burbage in Buxton, Derbyshire. In 1911 he was employed as a farm bailiff at Foxlow Grange near Buxton.

They had the following children:

Ernest Askey. He was born at Tissington on 20 August 1895. In 1911 aged fifteen he was working as a grocer's assistant. He married Elsie Tait in 1919 at St. James's church, Harpur Hill in Buxton. He died in 1976.

Martha Hannah Askey. She was born at Burbage in 1901, and was married to Isaac Holme in 1920 at St. James's church, Harpur Hill.

William Thomas Askey. He was born at Burbage in 1903. He married Nora Lomas in 1934 at Harpur Hill Methodist Chapel in Buxton. He died in 1994.

Albert Henry Askey. He was born at Burbage in 1906. He married Eliza Bentley in 1937 at Harpur Hill Methodist Chapel.

Thomas Askey died in 1952 at Buxton aged 84 years.
