Samuel Askey 1880-1952

Samuel Askey was born in 1881 at Milldale near Alstonefield in Staffordshire, the son of William Askey 1844-1917 and his wife nee Jane Berisford 1841-1919.

In 1901 he was aged 20 working on the farm of Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Wilton at Crosslow Bank, Alsop-en-le-Dale in Derbyshire.

He married Mary Ann Allen in 1907. She was born in 1884, the daughter of Joseph and Ann Allen of Alstonefield. They had the following children:

Edith Askey. She was born on 12 March 1909 at Alstonefield, and baptised there on 11 April 1909. In 1930 she was married to George Thomas Oswald Ratledge 1904-1980 at Towcester in Northamptonshire. They had six children. Edith Ratledge died on 31 May 1971 at Helmdon, Brackley in Northamptonshire (1).

Samuel Askey. He was born in 1911 and died in the same year at Brassington in Derbyshire.

Martha Askey. She was born on 10 August 1912. In 1942 she was married to John Heywood Armstrong, and they lived at Glossop in Derbyshire. She died in 1979, and her husband died in the same year.

Samuel Askey was living in Alstonefield in 1911 with his wife Mary Ann and daughter Edith Askey. However Mary Ann Askey died on 30 October 1912 aged only 28 years.

In 1916 Samuel Askey married Kate Ball at Bradford in Yorkshire. They had a son Arthur Askey born on 17 September 1917. While serving in the Second World War he was taken prisoner and returned home in poor health. He died in 1971 aged 54 years.

Samuel Askey died in 1952.
