James Askey was born in 1725 at Ashover in Derbyshire, the son of James Askey and his wife Anne (maiden surname unknown). He was baptised at Ashover on 1 December 1734.
On 7 May 1750 he married Mary Hole at Alfreton in Derbyshire..
They lived in Ashover, and had the following children, all baptised at Ashover:
James Askey. He was baptised on 30 March 1752.
Anne Askey. She was baptised on 27 October 1754 (1). She died unmarried in 1775, and was buried at Ashover on 9 March 1775.
Richard Askey. He was baptised on 2 February 1760.
Mary Askey. She was baptised on 28 October 1764.
Their mother Mary Askey nee Hole died in 1768 and was buried at Ashover on 26 February 1768.
This Ashover family was evidently prosperous and locally well established. James Askey was probably the progenitor of the generations of Askey families to be found later in and around Chesterfield in Derbyshire (2).
(1) In the Ashover baptism register her surname is incorrectly recorded as Ashkey.
(2) The surname is sometimes spelt Haskey or Haskew in parish regisers and other records.
