Joseph Sheldon was born in 1875 at Strines, New Mills in Derbyshire, the son of Samuel Sheldon 1845-1882 and his wife nee Ann Middleton.
In 1908 he married Mary Julia Applegate at Stockport in Cheshire. She was born in 1876 at Chapel-en-le-Frith in Derbyshire, the daughter of Joseph Applegate (born in 1844 in Bradford-on-Avon in Wiltshire) and his wife Mary. They lived at Smith Fields in Chapel-en-le-Frith, but by 1891 widowed Joseph Applegate had moved to Stockport.
In 1911 Joseph and Mary Julia Sheldon were living at 4 Churchill Street, Heaton Norris, Stockport. He was then a railway platelayer.
They had a son Charles Nield Applegate, born in 1904 in Stockport. He died at Preston in Lancashire in 1933 aged 29 years. Two other children had died by 1911.
Joseph Sheldon died in Manchester in 1965 aged 90 years.
His wife Mary Julia Sheldon had predeceased him. She had died in Salford in 1952 aged 75 years.
