Richard Bateman 1677-1761

Richard Bateman was born in 1677, the son of Thomas Bateman 1646-1713 of Hartington in Derbyshire and his wife nee Guarterick Cockaine (died 1677).

His sister was Elizabeth Bateman 1675-1731, who was married to Ralph Sterndale of Pole Hall in Hartington on 23 April 1697. They were the parents of Ralph Sterndale 1721-1796 and grandparents of Nancy Sterndale 1749-1779, the first wife of Richard Gould 1742-1809 of Brownhill in Warslow, Staffordshire.

Richard Bateman married Dorothy Sleigh, the daughter of James Sleigh of Hartington on 8 March 1702. She was the sister of Mary Sleigh, the second wife her husband's father Thomas Bateman 1646-1713. Richard and Dorothy Bateman had a son, Thomas Bateman 1703-1704 who was baptised at Hartington on 19 February 1703, and buried there on 1 July 1704. Dorothy Bateman died in 1704, and was buried at Hartington on 16 January 1704 (1).

On 1 August 1713 Richard Bateman married Sarah Gould 1689-1772, the daughter of William Gould of Pilsbury Grange and his wife Mary Hollis 1654-1713.

Richard and Sarah Bateman had the following children:

Guarterick Bateman 1714-1795. She was baptised at Hartington on 18 June 1814, and was married to William Edensor, yeoman, of Hartington on 1 August 1736. They had a family. She died in 1795, and was buried at Hartington on 26 June 1795.

Mary Bateman 1716-1808. She was baptised at Hartington on 9 April 1716. On 28 April 1735 she was married to Samuel Sleigh of Hartington, yeoman and had children. She died in 1808, and was buried at Hartington on 15 March 1808.

Sarah Bateman 1718-1804. She was baptised at Hartington on 17 September 1718. She was married to Mark Robinson, a merchant in York. They had no children. She died in 1804, and was buried at York.

Hannah Bateman 1720-1750. She was baptised at Hartington on 31 December 1720. She was married to Joshua Ellis of Leek in Staffordshire, a mercer. They had no children. She died on 10 March 1750, and was buried at Hartington on 12 March 1750.

Elizabeth Bateman 1722-1755. She was baptised at Hartington on 21 March 1722. She was married on 24 June 1748 to her cousin Ralph Sterndale 1721-1796, and had children. She died in 1755, and was buried at Hartington on 5 May 1755.

Dorothy Bateman 1725-1752. She was baptised at Hartington on 5 April 1725. She died unmarried in 1752, and was buried at Hartington on 1 September 1752.

Richard Bateman 1727-1774. He was baptised at Hartington on 14 December 1727. He married Elizabeth Leek, the daughter of Ralph Leek of the Heath House in Staffordshire, yeoman, on 2 February 1758, and they had a family. His Will is dated 14 August 1771. He died in 1774, and was buried at Hartington on 20 January 1744.

William Bateman 1733-1737. He was baptised at Hartington on 20 June 1733. He died in 1737, and was buried at Hartington on 3 February 1737.

Anne Bateman 1736-1777. She was baptised at Hartington on 14 October 1736. She died unmarried in 1777. Her will is dated 1777. She died in that year, and was buried at Hartington on 4 July 1777.



Richard Bateman 1677-1761 died in 1761 at Hartington, and was buried there on 9 April 1761. His will is dated 20 October 1759 and was proved on 17 June 1761. Sarah Bateman died in 1772, and was buried at Hartington on 10 July 1772.
