[[Transcript of the Will]
This is the Last Will and Testament of me Raphael Gillum now residing at No 32 Royal York Crescent Clifton near Bristol Doctor of Medicine First I desire that all my just debts and funeral and Testamentary expenses may be duly paid and satisfied as soon as conveniently may be after my decease. I give and devise unto my Great Nephew William James Gillum a Lieutenant in Her Majestys First Regiment of Foot Second Batallion now or lately stationed in Cephalonia and his heirs all those my Messuages or Tenements pieces or parcels of ground and hereditaments situate in Worship Street and in the Curtain Road in the Parish of Saint Leonard Shoreditch in the County of Middlesex And also all those my eight Cottages or tenements pieces or parcels of ground and hereditaments situate in Gillums Fields in the same parish and all which said premises hereinbefore described are held on several leases by Charles Hall No 4 Brecknock Terrace Camden Town in the said County of Middlesex and Thomas Flight of Bond Court House in the Parish of Saint Stephen Walbrook in the City of London Merchant respectively with their rights members and appurtenances To hold the same subject to the said leases unto and to the use of the said William James Gillum his heirs and assigns for ever And I give and devise unto my Great Nephew Sidney George Gillum now or lately residing with his Mother at Christchurch in the County of Hants and his heirs all those my Messuages or tenements pieces or parcels of ground and hereditaments situate in Baileys Court Smithydoor and Deans Gate in the City of Manchester with their and every of their rights members and appurtenances To hold the same unto and to the use of the same Sidney George Gillum his heirs and assigns for ever I give and bequeath unto each of my Niece Sarah Gillum and Marianne Gillum both of Chichester in the County of Sussex one clear Annuity or yearly sum of fifty pounds for and during her life respectively. And from and after the decease of either one of them I give her said Annuity to the other of them thenceforth for herself in addition to her own Annuity. And I also give and bequeath unto Ann Gillum of Christchurch aforesaid Widow one clear Annuity or yearly sum of fifty pounds for and during her life And I direct that the several Annuities hereinbefore given shall be paiable and paid in or by each in half yearly portions in every year without any deduction or abatement out of the same or any part thereof respectively on any account whatever. I give and bequeath unto the several persons hereinafter named as legatees the several legacies or sums of money hereinafter mentioned that is to say To Thomas Maclean of the Haymarket Westminster Printseller the sum of Five hundred Pounds To Raphael Gillum Hall son of the said Charles Hall the sum of three hundred pounds To Raphael Gillum Wass son of Joseph Wass formerly of Lea Green near Matlock in the County of Derby Lead Smelter deceased the sum of Three hundred pounds To each of the other Children of the said Charles Hall and Joseph Wass respectively and to each of the Children of John Alsop now or late Barmaster of Wensley Hall in the County of Derby the sum of Nineteen pounds nineteen shillings respectively To Abel Riley late Servant of the said Joseph Wass the sum of five pounds to Hannah Pierson of Lea in the County of Derby Widow the like sum of five pounds. To my Servant Charlotte Mizon the sum of Five hundred pounds to be paid to her free of legacy duty And to Alfred Hawley of Broad Street Buildings in the City of London Merchant the sum of Five hundred pounds And I desire that the said several legacies or sums of money hereinbefore bequeathed shall be paid with in six calendar months from the day of my decease I give my Gold Watch with its appendages and also the portraits of myself and my late Wife to the said Ann Gillum And I give and bequeath all my Plate and Jewelry and also my Family Rings unto the said Sarah Gillum and Marianne Gillum to be divided between them in equal shares and proportions as tenants in Common I give a Mourning Ring of the value of Five Guineas to each of my friends hereinafter named respectively that is to say Thomas Flight of Walbrook Merchant John Bright Esquire The Present Member of Parliament for Manchester The Reverend Stanley Miller of Framlingham Suffolk The Reverend Charles Norford Rector of Weston Birt near Tetbury Gloucestershire John Gould of Manchester Esquire Major Robert Gillum of Exmouth Devon and the said Alfred Hawley and I direct that my Executors shall as soon as conveniently may be after my decease prepare the said rings and deliver the same to the said several legatees thereof respectively And I give and bequeath all the rest residue and remainder of my goods chattels monies and securities for money and other personal estate and effects of what nature and kind soever and wheresoever not hereinbefore disposed of after and subject to the payment of my said debts and expences hereinbefore mentioned and paying and provided for the said several said several legacies and annuities hereby bequeathed aforesaid unto and equally between my said Great Nephews William James Gillum and Sidney George Gillum their executors administrators and assigns absolutely and if either or both of them should die before me then the share intended for each Great Nephew so dying shall go to such his Child or Children as shall attain the age of twenty one years and if more than one in equal shares and proportions and if either of them my said Great Nephews should die before me and without having any Child or Children surviving him then the whole to go to the survivor of them my said Great Nephews or such his Child or Children as shall attain the said age of twenty one years And I constitute and appoint the said William James Gillum Sidney George Gillum and Alfred Hawley to be Executors of this my Will And I authorize them to reimburse themselves and each other all costs charges damages and expences to be incurred in and about the execution of this my will And I request that my said Great Nephew William James Gillum shall be informed of my decease immediately on or as soon as can be after the happening of that event that he may return to England and take the necessary steps for proving this my Will and assuming the office of an Executor thereof And lastly I do hereby revoke and make void all and every other will and wills made by me at any time heretofore And do declare that this present writing comprised in three sheets of paper contains the whole of my last Will and Testament In witness whereof I have set my hand to each sheet of this my last Will and Testament this first day of June one thousand eight hundred and fifty three – Raphael Gillum MD – Signed and acknowledged by the said Raphael Gillum as to be the last Will and Testament in the presence of us present at the same time who in his presence at his request and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses – Charles Cordeux Watch Maker Rodney Terrace Clifton Thomas Bowen ? I Raphael Gillum MD of Clifton No 32 York Crescent near Bristol by this my Codicil to my last Will I do cancel expunge and annul legacy of 500£ to Thos McLean McLean [sic] Printseller No 20 Haymarket? to ? the said Thos McLean and instead give to his wife and their ? Children six ? Legacies each of Nineteen pounds I cancel and revoke the legacies to the Children of Charles Hall I give to Mrs Wass of Lea Green to her Sisters Mrs Alsop of Wensley Hall in the County of Derby and Mrs Eyre of Sheffield in the County of York to each Sister a Legacy of 19£ I give to Lieut Col Robert Gillum 300£. I bequeath an annuity of 20£ to Charlotte Mizon in addition to 500 left to her by my last Will dated the 1st of June 1853. I give to the Revd Charles Norford of Weston Birt in the County of Gloucester a legacy of 19£ and one to his sister Norford of Church Row Fulham a legacy of 19£. I Raphael Gillum MD of No 32 York Crescent Clifton n[[ea]r Bristol make this second Codicil to my Will of June 1st 1853 revoke cancel and annull the name of Alfred Hawley as my executor and the Legacy of five hundred pounds to him – dated November 29th 1858 – Raphael Gillum M.D. signed by the Testator in the presence of the undersigned witnesses Charles Cordeux Watchmaker the Quadrant Clifton Edward Webb Watch Maker Quadrant Clifton
I Raphael Gillum Dr of Med residing at No 32 York Crescent Clifton n[[ea]r Bristol make this third Codicil to my will of 1853 I appoint Major Willm Gillum my residuary & give him my Share & Shares in the Rhymney Railway 5 Shares in the Necropolis 50? Shares [[[blank] in the Working Mans Improvmt. one share in Lond: Brighton & South Coast I revoke the 300£ to Lt Col Gillum ? Dated 5th day of May 1859

In Her Majestys Court of Probate The principal Registry in the Goods of Raphael Gillum Doctor of Medicine deceased
I Charles Cordeux of Rodney Place Clifton in the County of Gloucester Watchmaker make oath and say that I am one of the subscribing witnesses to the last Will and Testament of Raphael Gillum late of No 32 Royal York Crescent Clifton near Bristol in the County of Gloucester Doctor of Medicine deceased the said Will being now hereinto annexed bearing date the first day of June one thousand eight hundred and fifty three and that the said Testator executed the said Will on the day of the date thereof by signing his name at the foot or end thereof as the same now appears thereon in the presence of me and of Thomas Bowen the other subscribed Witness thereto both of us being present at the same time and we thereupon attested and subscribed the said Will in the presence of the said Testator and having particularly noticed the words in the County of Derby appearing written between the thirteenth and fourteenth lines of the second sheet [[? and the name being written between inserted] the ninth and tenth lines of the third sheet thereof I further make oath and say that the said interlineations were made before the said execution of the said Will and I further make oath and say that I am also one of the subscribing witnesses to the first Codicil to the said Will the said Codicil being now hereunto annexed bearing date the twenty eighth day of June one thousand eight hundred and fifty six and that the said Testator executed the said Codicil on the day of the date thereof by signing his name at the foot or end thereof as the same now appears thereon in the presence of me and of Edward Sargent Webb the other subscribed witness thereto both of us being present at the said time and we thereupon attested and subscribed the said Codicil in the presence of the said Testator And I further make oath and say that I am also one of the subscribing witnesses to the second Codicil to the said Will the said Codicil being now hereunto annexed bearing date the twenty ninth day of November one thousand eight hundred and fifty eight and that the said Testator executed the said Codicil by signing his name at the foot or end thereof as the same now appears thereon in the presence of me and the said Edward Sargent Webb the other subscribed witness thereof both of us being present at the same time and we thereupon attested and subscribed the said Codicil in the presence of the said Testator (the said Edward Sargent Webb omitting the name “Sargent” in his signature) and having particularly noticed the revocation of one legacy of five hundred pounds to Alfred Hawley appearing at the foot of the said Codicil I further make oath and say that the same was inserted previously to the said execution of the said Codicil And I further make oath and say that I am also one of the subscribing Witnesses to the third Codicil to the said Will the said Codicil being now hereunto annexed bearing date the fifth day of May one thousand eight hundred and fifty nine and that the said Testator executed the said Codicil on the day of the date thereof by signing his name at the foot or end thereof as the same now appears thereon in the presence of me and of Lawrence William Castle the other subscribed Witness thereto both of us being present at the same time and we thereupon attested and subscribed the said Codicil in the presence of the said Testator And having particularly noticed the revocation of Three hundred pounds to Lieutenant Colonel Gillum deceased appearing at the foot or end of the said Codicil and I further make [[oath omitted] and say that the same was inserted previously to the said execution of the said Codicil – Charles Cordeux - Sworn by the said Charles Cordeux at Doctors Commons London this twentieth day of January 1860 Before me T. Proved at London with three Codicils 18th Feb[ruar]y 1860 By the oath of William James Gillum Esquire the Great Nephew one of the Executors to whom adm[[inistrati]on was granted. Power reserved of making the like Grant to the Reverend Sidney George Gillum Clerk the Great Nephew also the other Executor.

On the 18th. day of February 1860 the Will with three Codicils thereto of Raphael Gillum late of No 32 Royal York Crescent Clifton (near Bristol) in the County of Gloucester Doctor of Medicine deceased, who died on the 4th day of January 1860 at No. 32 Royal York Crescent aforesaid was proved in the Principal Registry of Her Majesty’s Court of Probate, by the Oath of William James Gillum of No 8 Stanhope Terrace Gloucester Gate Regents Park in the County of Middlesex Esquire a major (unattached) in Her Majestys Army the Great Nephew one of the Executors therein named he having been first sworn duly to administer, power being reserved of making the like Grant to The Reverend Sidney George Gillum Clerk the Great Nephew also the other Executor therein named
