Summary of the main provisions of the Will of Raphael Gillum 1860

The last Will and Testament of me Raphael Gillum residing at 32 Royal York Crescent, Clifton near Bristol, Doctor of Medicine

First all debts and expenses to be paid as soon as possible

I give to my great nephew William James Gillum (a Lieutenant in the First Regiment of Foot Second Battalion stationed in Cephalonia) all my property in Worship Street and Curtain Road and my eight Cottages and land in Gillums Fields in Shoreditch, Middlesex, leased by Charles Hall of 4 Brecknock Terrace, Camden Town, Middlesex & Thomas Flight of Bond Court House in St Stephen Walbrook parish in London merchant

- I give to my great nephew Sidney George Gillum now or lately residing with his mother at Christchurch Hampshire my property in Baileys Court, Smithydoor and Deansgate in Manchester

- give a life annuity of £50 to each of my nieces Sarah Gillum and Marianne Gillum both of Chichester, Sussex (after the decease of either her annuity going to the other)

- I give a life annuity of £50 to Ann Gillum of Christchurch, widow

(These annuities to be paid half-yearly, without deductions)

I give legacies to the following :-

- £500 to Thomas Maclean of the Haymarket, Westminster printseller

- £300 to Raphael Gillum Hall, son of Charles Hall

- £300 to Raphael Gillum Wass, son of Joseph Wass formerly of Lea Green near Matlock in Derbyshire deceased

- £19 to each child of Charles Hall and Joseph Wass and to each child of John Alsop, Barmaster of Wensley Hall in Derbyshire

- £5 to Abel Riley late servant of Joseph Wass

- £5 to Hannah Pierson of Lea in Derbyshire, widow

- £500 to my servant Charlotte Mizon free of legacy duty

- £500 to Alfred Hawley of Broad Street Buildings in London, merchant

- I give my gold watch with its appendages and the portraits of myself and my late wife to Ann Gillum

- I give my Plate, Jewellery and my Family Rings to Sarah Gillum and Marianne Gillum to be divided equally between them

- I give a Mourning Ring worth five guineas to each of my friends :-

- I give the remainder of my property equally between my great nephews William James Gillum and Sidney George Gillum

- I appoint William James Gillum, Sidney George Gillum, and Alfred Hawley my Executors

- I revoke all other previous wills & make this my last will and testament

First Codicil

- I cancel the £500 to Thos McLean and instead give it to his wife and £19 to each of the children

- I cancel the legacies to the children of Charles Hall

- I give £19 to Mrs Wass of Lea Green and £19 each to her sisters Mrs Alsop of Wensley Hall in Derbyshire and Mrs Eyre of Sheffield

- I give £300 to Lt Col Robert Gillum

- I bequeath an annuity of £20 to Charlotte Mizon in addition to her £500

- I give £19 to the Reverend Charles Norford of Weston Birt in Gloucestershire, and £19 to his sister [[blank] Norford of Church Row in Fulham

- I give £19 to the Revd Stanley Miller and £19 to each of his children

Second Codicil

- I cancel the name of Alfred Hawley as my executor and his £500 legacy

Dated November 29th 1858 – Raphael Gillum M.D.

Third Codicil

- I appoint Major William Gillum my residuary & give him my Shares in the Rhymney Railway, the Necropolis, the Working Mans Improvement [[Society?] and the London Brighton & South Coast [[Railway?].

- I revoke the £300 to Lt Col Gillum

declaring on oath that he had witnessed the signing and witnessing the execution of the Will and Codicils, noting the several insertions made before signing.]

Proved at London with three Codicils 18 February 1860
By the oath of William James Gillum esquire one of the Executors to whom administration was granted, power being reserved of making the same grant to the Reverend Sidney George Gillum the other Executor.
