William Smith Gould was born on 22 May 1871 at Grindon in Staffordshire, the son of William Smith Gould and his wife née Rachel Smith. He was baptised at Grindon on 25 June 1871.
In 1901 he was working as a general agricultural labourer at Mootlow Farm near Alsop-en-le Dale in Derbyshire for his younger brother Joseph Gould, and was there as a farm assistant in 1911.
He died unmarried in 1936 aged 64 years.
