Nat Gould

Ellen Smith Gould 1858-1932

Ellen Smith Gould was born on 11 October 1858 at Waterfall in Staffordshire, the daughter of William Smith Gould and his wife née Rachel Smith. She was baptised at Grindon on 13 November 1858.

In 1891 she was living at home with her family at Grindon Moor aged 12 years. The 1881 Census Return records her as visiting her sister Mary Gould who was working as a domestic servant for John Hand, farmer in Tissington, Derbyshire. Also working there was Matthew Millward, an indoor farm servant, whom Mary Gould was to marry during the following year. In 1891 she was still unmarried, living with her parents then at Dunge Bottom farm in Alstonefield, Staffordshire.

She was married to Joseph Gould in 1894. He was born in 1838 in the parish of Warslow and Elkstones in Staffordshire, and was a joiner and carpenter. In 1901 they were living at Moorside in Elkstone with their children Joseph Gould (born in 1896) and Ellen Lillian Gould (born in 1898).

Her husband Joseph Gould died on 10 February 1905 (1).

In 1911 she was farming at Cow Hey Head in Warslow with her son and daughter. She died in 1932 aged 73 years.
