John Bailey was born at Horton in Staffordshire in 1860, the son of James and Rachael Bailey.
His father, born at Norton-in-the-Moors in Staffordshire in 1833, farmed at Dunwood Dales in Longsdon and later at Meghole farm in Heaton, both places being in Staffordshire.
He remarried after the death of his first wife Rachael in 1863. His second wife Hannah Knight was born at Rushton James (now part of Rushton Spencer parish) in Staffordshire in 1852. She was the mother of Ellen Bailey and William Bailey 1873-1920.
James Bailey and his family moved from the Endon area in the early 18802 to farm at Upper Hanson (New Hanson Grange), where the four youngest children were born.
John Bailey was a wheelwright and farmer in Rushton Spencer, near Leek in Staffordshire.
In 1891 he was living there with his wife Elizabeth. She was born at Bosley in Cheshire in 1864. They had the following children, all born in Rushton Spencer:
John L. Bailey. He was born in 1884.
William A. Bailey. He was born in 1887.
Matthew H. Bailey. He was born in 1890.
