James Bailey was born at Norton-in-the-Moors in Staffordshire in 1833, the son of Matthew and Martha Bailey. His father was a beesom maker (1) and his mother made buttons. In 1851 the family were living at Greenway Moor, Horton Hay in Staffordshire, where James Bailey and his brothers also made beesoms.
James Bailey married Mary Ann Moss in 1859. She was born at Rushton James (now combined in Rushton Spencer parish) in Staffordshire in 1840. In 1861 they were living at Lee Cottages in Horton in Staffordshire. James Bailey was then an agricultural labourer. By 1871 they were farming at Dunwood Dales in Longsdon near Leek in Staffordshire.
They had the following children:
Ester Ann Bailey. She was born in 1862 at Dunwood in Longsdon.
Joseph Bailey. He was born in 1863 at Dunwood.
Hannah Maria Bailey. She was born in 1869 at Dunwood.
John Bailey 1860-. He was born in 1860 at Horton in Staffordshire.
Joseph Bailey. He was born in 1864 at Endon in Staffordshire.
Ellen Bailey 1864-1926. She was born in 1865 at Endon. She was married in 1887 to Francis John Redfern at Alstonefield Wesleyan Chapel. They farmed at Mootlow and had a son and daughter. Francis John Redfern died in 1893, and Ellen Redfern was married to Joseph Gould in 1895. They had four sons and three daughters. Ellen Gould nee Bailey died in 1926 aged 61 years.
Their mother Mary Bailey died in 1864.
James Bailey married Hannah Knight in 1872. She was born in 1851 at Endon in Staffordshire. In 1881 the family were living at Meghole farm at Heaton in Staffordshire, but they had moved to farm at Upper Hanson (New Hanson Grange) by 1891, and they were still there in 1911.
They had the following children:
William Bailey 1873-1920. He was born in 1873 at Endon and died in 1920.
Mary Emily Bailey. She was born in 1874 at Endon.
Sarah Bailey. She was born in 1876 at Endon.
James Bailey. He was born in 1877 and died on 15 August 1885 aged eight years.
Josiah Bailey. He was born in 1879 at Endon.
Alice Bailey. She was born in 1880 at Endon.
Harry Bailey. He was born and died in 1882, and is commemorated on his parents' gravestone at Alstonefield.
Annie Bailey. She was born in 1883 and died in 1884, and is commemorated on his parents' gravestone at Alstonefield.
Herbert Bailey. He was born and died in 1884, and is commemorated on his parents' gravestone at Alstonefield.
Martha Jane Bailey. She was born in 1885 at New Hanson Grange.
Francis Clifford Bailey. He was born in 1887 at New Hanson Grange.
Ruth Bailey. She was born in 1889 at New Hanson Grange.
Samuel Bailey. He was born and died in 1890, and is commemorated on his parents' gravestone at Alstonefield.
Alfred Bailey. He was born in 1891 at New Hanson Grange. He was killed in action in the First World War on 10 April 1916.

Their father James Bailey died on 12 May 1913 aged 81 years and was buried at Alstonefield where there is a memorial gravestone inscribed to his memory and that of his wife, son James Bailey who died on 15 August 1885 aged eight years and children Samuel Bailey, Annie Bailey, Herbert Bailey and Harry Bailey who died in infancy.
His wife Hannah Bailey predeceased him on 8 April 1898 aged 48 years.
(1) A beesom or besom is a broom made of a bundle of twigs tied to a central pole. Beesoms are still made in England and sold at gardening stores as an outdoor broom.
(2) The family were actually at New Hanson Grange, a farm next to Hanson Grange. Although near Tissington village, which was probably the postal address, it was actually in Newton Grange parish. Rowland Arthur Prince was then farming at Hanson Grange.
