Hannah Bennington was born on 19 July 1830 at Wendling in Norfolk, and baptised there on 25 July 1830. She was the daughter of John Bennington 1802-1855 of Wendling and his wife nee Martha Murrell 1797-1875.
On 21 September 1854 she was married to John Rowing at Clerkenwell in London. He was born on 16 October 1832 at Wendling, the son of Thomas Rowing (born in 1799 at Lewes in Sussex) and his wife nee Mahala Payne. John Rowing was a carpenter and Methodist local preacher. When the Census was take in 1861 they were living in a cottage on the Turnpike Road in Wendling, with her widowed mother. They moved to London, and in 1869 (when their daughter Miriam Susannah Rowing was born) they were living at 3 Alice Cottages, Carlton Grove in Peckham. They had the following children:
Albert John Rowing. He was born in Wendling in 1862, and baptised on 13 August 1862 at Swaffham in Norfolk. In 1881 he was living with his father and stepmother in Bermondsey, unmarried and employed as a stoker in an oil mill. In 1891 he married Ada Maria Baker 1869-1892 and they had a son and daughter. He died in 1927 at Liverpool.
William Rowing. He was born in 1864. In 1881 he was unmarried and living in Bermondsey with his father and stepmother employed as a printer, as was his brother John Thomas Rowing.
John Rowling. He was born in 1865 and died in the following year.
John Thomas Rowing. He was born in 1866. In 1881 he was unmarried and living in Bermondsey with his father and stepmother employed as a printer, as was his brother William Rowing. He died in 1883 in Camberwell, London.
Miriam Susannah Rowing. She was born in 1869 and baptised at St Jude's temporary church in Peckham, London on 28 March 1869. She died in 1875 aged only seven years.
Their mother Hannah Rowing nee Bennington died in in 1870 at Camberwell.
In 1870 their father John Rowing married Mary Ann Young in Greenwich, London. They had the following children, all born in Bermondsey:
Mary Ann Rebecca Rowing. She was born in 1872.
Blanch Maud Rowing. She was born in 1874, and baptised on 1 April 1874 at St James Church in Bermondsey.
Hannah Mahala Rowing. She was born in 1876. On 22 December 1895 she was married to Herbert John Ellis 1874-1920. They lived in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. She died there in 1968
Barbara Shoesmith Rowing. She was born in 1880, and baptised on 22 June 1881 at St James Church in Bermondsey.
When the Census was taken in 1881 the family were living at 89 Linsey Street, Bermondsey in London. With them was father-in-law Thomas S Rowing aged 82, a barge builder born in Lewes, Sussex.
John Rowing died in 1893 in London.
