William Bennington was born on 5 July 1832 at Wendling and baptised there on 15 July 1832. He was the son of John Bennington of Wendling and his wife nee Martha Murrell.
He married Susannah Bates (or Beats) in 1866 at Southwark in London. She was born in about 1833 at Cambridge.
In 1871 they were living at 22 Maxey Road in Plumstead in London with their four children, a lodger and Sarah Murrell aged 14 (born 1857) the niece of William Bennington. The family were at the same address when the 1881 Census was taken. William Bennington was then recorded as being a Plate Layer.
With them in 1881 were two people described as "relative", namely John W. Bates a single man aged 20 (born 1861) a labourer born in Northampton, and Ann Hadon a single woman aged 36 (born 1845 in Cambridge)working as a waitress.
They had four children (all born in Plumstead):
Martha Bennington. She was born in 1867.
Ann Bennington. She was born in 1868.
Francis Bennington. He was born in 1870.
Charles Bennington. He was born in 1880.
Their father William Bennington died at Lambeth in 1903.
