William Hambleton 1842-1905

William Hambleton was born on 3 June 1841 at Milldale in Alstonefield parish in Staffordshire, the son of Samuel Hambleton and his wife nee Rachel Beresford 1812-1894. His father was a stone mason, and he followed him into the same trade. He was also a farmer.

On 18 July 1861 he married Mary Lowe at Hartington church in Derbyshire. She was born in 1844, and was baptised at Hartington on 17 March 1844. She was the daughter of John Lowe the village blacksmith and his wife Ann.

William and Mary Hambleton lived successively at Milldale (1871 Census) where William Hambleton worked as a stone mason, Ilam Tops at Ilam in Staffordshire (1881) where he also farmed 28 acres, High Needham near Earl Sterndale in Derbyshire (1891) where again he combined farming with his work as a stone mason.

Finally he returned to Milldale (1901) where he continued as a stone mason while he and his wife ran the Temperance Hotel. Mary Hambleton also kept a shop in the village.

They had the following children:

Harriet Hambleton. She was born in 1864 at Milldale.

Rachel Hambleton. She was born in 1867 at Milldale.

Hannah L. Hambleton. She was born in 1869 at Milldale.

Mary Ann Hambleton. She was born in 1871 at Milldale.

William Hambleton. He was born in 1873 at Milldale.

Martha A. Hambleton. She was born in 1875 at Milldale.

John H. Hambleton. He was born in 1877 at Stanshope in Ilam parish.

Samuel Hambleton. He was born in 1879 at Stanshope, and became a stone mason like his father. He married Mary Ellen Elizabeth Allen in 1900. They lived at Kingsterndale near Buxton in Derbyshire. He died in 1963 aged 84 years.

Fred Hambleton. He was born in 1881 at Ilam Tops in Ilam parish.

Lizzie Hambleton. She was born in 1882 at Ilam Tops.

Alice Hambleton. She was born in 1884 at Ilam Tops.

Herbert Hambleton. He was born in 1886 at Ilam Tops.

Charles Hambleton. He was born in 1888 at Ilam Tops. He died on 4 December 1958 and was buried at Alstonefield.

Their father William Hambleton died on 13 May 1905 aged 63 years, and was buried at Alstonefield where there is a gravestone inscribed to his memory and that of his wife.

His widow Mary Hambleton remained a shopkeeper at Milldale, where she was living in 1911 with her son Charles Hambleton, his wife Bertha Hambleton and their family.

She died on 11 May 1928 aged 85 years.
