Thomas Greensmith was born at Thorpe in Derbyshire in 1818, the son of Thomas Greensmith 1785-1876 and Thomasin his wife nee Thomasin Goodwin Gould 1787-1853.
He was a chemist trading at 25 Market Place, Rugeley in Staffordshire. In 1851 he had, as an apprentice chemist and druggist, his nephew Thomas Greensmith aged 17 born in 1834 in Manchester.
In 1845 he married Louisa Barton of Tamworth in Staffordshire. They had the following children, all born in Rugeley:
Frances C. Greensmith. She was born in 1850.
Claude C. Greensmith. He was born in 1852. In 1871 age 19 he was a banker's clerk.
Louisa T. Greensmith. She was born in 1853.
Newcombe G. Greensmith. He was born in 1855. In 1871 aged 16 he was a sailor.
Frank Greensmith. He was born in 1857. In 1881 he was a colliery agent, unmarried and living at home.
Emily Ruth Greensmith. She was born in 1859.
Clarence Tom Greensmith. He was born in 1861. In 1881 he was a colliery clerk, unmarried and living at home.
Cecil Greensmith. He was born in 1864.
By 1871 Thomas Greensmith had become also the Registrar for Births and Deaths. He died in 1890.
In 1881 also living with the family was his niece Annie Greensmith aged 30 and unmarried, born in Thorpe in 1851.
