High Needham
Ralph Bagshaw was born early in 1815 at High Needham in Hartington parish in Derbyshire, the son of George Bagshaw and his wife nee Hannah Bagshaw. He was baptised at Earl Sterndale in Derbyshire on 9 March 1815.
He married Ann Gould on 2 January 1845 by licence at Hartington church. She was born in 1825 at Ridge End in Sheen parish in Staffordshire, the daughter of Richard Gould 1780-1843 and his wife Alice.
They had the following children, all born at High Needham:
Elizabeth Bagshaw. She was born in 1846, and baptised at Earl Sterndale on 4 January 1846. She was married to Thomas Housley, son of George and Margaret Housley.
She died on 4 May 1927 at Biggin Hall in Derbyshire.
Hannah Bagshaw. She was born in 1847, and baptised at Earl Sterndale on 7 November 1847.
Ann Bagshaw. She was born in 1848.
Maria Bagshaw 1857-1913. She was born in 1857, and baptised at Earl Sterndale on 8 February 1857. She was married to her first cousin William Gould 1850-1899 on 7 February 1870 at Earl Sterndale. He was born in 1850 at Crowdecote in Hartington parish in Derbyshire, the son of William Gould 1822-1859 of Crowdecote and his wife nee Rachel Bagshaw 1813-1885.
When the 1851 Census was taken Ralph Bagshaw was farming 120 acres at High Needham. The acreage had increased by 1861 to 128 acres, and to 1,000 acres by 1871. However it had declined to 78 acres by 1881, although he was still employing two men.
He died on 28 December 1887 at High Needham (1). His wife Ann Bagshaw nee Gould had predeceased him a few months earlier, on 12 May 1887 (2).
(1) His personal estate was £12,722, his Will with one Codicil being proved at the Principal Probate Registry in London on 27 March 1888. Administration was granted to his daughters Elizabeth Housley (wife of Thomas Housley) of Friden in Derbyshire and Maria Gould (wife of William Gould) of High Needham: England and Wales National Probate Calendar 1858-1966 (1888) page 236.
