The Dove valley at Crowdecote

Rachel Bagshaw was born at High Needham near Earl Sterndale in Derbyshire in 1813, the daughter of George Bagshaw of High Needham and his wife nee Hannah Bagshaw. She was baptised at Earl Sterndale church on 29 August 1813.

By 1841 the family were at Bridge End Farm in Crowdecote in Hartington parish in Derbyshire. William Gould was then working there, and on 7 February 1844 he married his employer's daughter Rachel Bagshaw at Hartington church. He was born at Longnor in Staffordshire in 1827, the son of Richard Gould 1780-1843 and his wife Alice.

When the 1851 Census was taken William Gould was farming sixty acres in Hartington Middle Quarter parish, at Crowdecote.

William and Rachel Gould had the following children:

Ann Bagshaw Gould. She was born in 1845 at High Needham. On 7 February 1870 she was married by licence to Henry White 1836-1882 at Earl Sterndale. They lived at Brushfield near Taddington in Derbyshire. She died in 1881 aged only 36 years. He died on 11 July 1882 (1).

Thomasin Gould. Born at Crowdecote, she was baptised at Earl Sterndale on 3 October 1847.

William Gould. He was born in 1850 in Hartington parish (2), and was baptised on 30 June 1850 at Earl Sterndale. He married his cousin Maria Bagshaw on 22 November 1875 by licence at Hartington church, and died in 1899.

Their father William Gould died in 1859 aged only 38 years, and was buried at Earl Sterndale on 17 August 1859 where there is a gravestone inscribed to his memory.

Rachel Gould nee Bagshaw died at Crowdecote in 1885.

Notes

(1) His Will was proved at Derby on 21 August 1882. His personal estate was £291 18s 6d, and the executors were John Heathcote of Taddington and William Bloore of Brushfield, farmers: England and Wales National Probate Calendar 1858-1966 (1882) page 247. John Heathcote was probably his brother-in-law.
(2) In the 1851 Census Return his age was given as ten months. The Census was taken on the night of 30 March 1851.
