Ralph Adams was born in 1759 at Narrowdale in Alstonefield parish in Staffordshire, the son of Ralph Adams 1722-1784 of Narrowdale and his wife nee Elizabeth Wood. He was baptised on 7 August 1759 at Alstonefield church.
On 4 November 1787 he married Ellen Salt of Ellastone in Staffordshire at Alstonefield. They farmed at Narrowdale, and had the following children, all baptised in Alstonefield church:
Ralph Adams. He was baptised on 8 July 1788.
William Adams. He was baptised on 30 May 1790.
Their mother Ellen Adams died in about 1807.
Ralph Adams married Mary Platt at Alstonefield church on 9 June 1808. They had the following children, the four eldest having been born before the marriage, all baptised and buried at Alstonefield:
Joseph Adams. He was born in 1795 and died on 2 November 1813 aged eighteen years. He was buried at Alstonefield, where he is commemorated on the gravestone of his parents.
George Adams. He was baptised on 29 August 1802. He married Frances Oliver of Hartington 1823-1910. He died on 7 August 1858, and was buried at Alstonefield where there is a gravestone inscribed to his memory and that of his wife.
Thomas Adams. He was baptised on 2 February 1805.
Sarah Adams. She was baptised on 12 April 1807.
Richard Adams. He was baptised on 1 February 1809. He married Maria Bonsall 1813-1885 of Alstonefield in 1841, and kept a grocer's and draper's shop in Alstonefield village. He died on 28 June 1874, and was buried at Alstonefield where there is a gravestone inscribed to his memory and that of his wife.
Rachel Adams. She was baptised on 27 September 1811.
Millicent Adams. She was born in 1817 and died on 27 January 1837 aged twenty years. She was buried at Alstonefield, where she is commemorated on the gravestone of her parents (1).
Their father Ralph Adams died on 6 January 1832 aged 73 years (2), and was buried at Alstonefield where there is a gravestone inscribed to his memory and those of his wife and their children Joseph Adams 1795-1813 and Millicent Adams 1817-1837.
His widow Mary Adams died on 22 April 1848 aged 68 years and was buried at Alstonefield.
(1) "[[Deaths] On the 27th ult. Millicent Adams, daughter of Mrs. Adams, of Narrowdale, Staffordshire, in the 21st year of her age, much respected by her family and friends." Derby Mercury 21 February 1838. Her father had predeceased her.
(2) "[[Deaths] On Friday last, at an advanced age, Mr. Ralph Adams, of Narrow Dale, near Alstonfield." Derby Mercury 11 January 1832.
