Humphrey Austin 1811-1895

Humphrey Austin was born in 1811 at Milldale in Alstonefield parish in Staffordshire.

He married Sarah (maiden surname unknown) 1813-1893. She was born at Hartington in Derbyshire.

Humphrey and Sarah Austin seem to have lived first in Hartington where their son James Austin was born. However when the Census was taken in 1851 they were living at Alsop-en-le-Dale in Derbyshire. Humphrey Austin was then an agricultural labourer. In 1861 they were living in Milldale, where they remained for the rest of their lives. By 1881 he was farming nine acres.

They had the following children:

James Austin. He was born in 1835 at Hartington, and baptised there on 6 December 1835. In 1838 he married Mary Hambleton. He died in 1895.

Hannah Austin. She was born in 1838 at Milldale. On 12 April 1864 she was married to Joseph Redfern at Alsop-en-le-Dale church. She died in 1899 aged 63 years.

Their father Humphrey Austin died on 5 August 1895 aged 85 years, and was buried at Alstonefield where there is a memorial gravestone inscribed to his memory and that of his wife.

His wife Sarah Austin predeceased him on 19 October 1893 aged 82 years.
