Hannah Austin 1838-1899

Alsop-en-le-Dale Church

Hannah Austin was born in 1838 at Milldale in Alstonefield parish in Staffordshire, the daughter of Humphrey Austin and his wife nee Sarah (maiden surname unknown).

When the Census was taken in 1841 and 1851 Hannah Austin was living with her parents at Alsop-en-le-Dale in Derbyshire.

In 1861 she was with her mother at the home of her widowed grandmother Hannah Austin aged 81 years (born in 1780 at Wetton in Staffordshire). She was working as a house servant.

Hannah Austin was married to Joseph Redfern on 12 April 1864 at Alsop-en-le-Dale church. He was born in 1825 at Tissington in Derbyshire.

Her husband had been previously married to Rachel Mould (born in Milldale in 1819), by whom he had a son Francis John Redfern 1854-1893 who was born in 1854 at Mootlow farm in Newton Grange parish near Alsop-en-le-Dale and married Ellen Bailey 1864-1926 in 1887. However Rachel Redfern had died in 1863.

Mootlow Farm

In 1871 Joseph and Hannah Redfern were farming 113 acres at Mootlow. With them was her stepson Francis John Redfern aged seventeen and working on the farm, together with indoor servants Sampson Allen aged seventeen (born in 1854 at Alsop-en-le-Dale) and Harriet Hambleton aged 23 (born in 1848 at Alstonefield in Staffordshire).

They were still there when the Census was taken in 1881. However by 1891 her stepson Francis John Redfern had taken over at Mootlow farm, and they had moved to the nearby Broad Close farm.

Joseph and Hannah Redfern had a daughter Ruth Naomi Redfern. She was born in 1865. In 1887 she was married to William Henry Walwyn 1863-1932. She died in 1946.

Hannah Redfern died in 1899 aged 63 years.

Her husband Joseph Redfern died in 1902 aged 78 years.
