Margaret Eld 1616-

Adbaston Church

Margaret Eld was born in 1616, the daughter of Richard Eld and his wife nee Margaret Crompton. She was baptised on 1 November 1616 at Seighford in Staffordshire.

On 30 September 1637 she was married at Adbaston church in Staffordshire to Thomas Gaywood.

He was born in 1594, the son of Thomas Gaywood of Bishops Offley in Staffordshire and his wife nee Catherine Vyse.

Bridgnorth Castle

They had the following children:

John Gaywood. He married Elizabeth Congreve, the daughter of Richard Congreve.

Barbara Gaywood. She was married to Samuel Clarke of Newport in Shropshire.

Elizabeth Gaywood. She was born in 1620, and was married to Walter Noel of Hilcote, Chebsey in Staffordshire (1). He was born in 1622. She had died by 1686 when Walter Noel married Hannah Unwin (2).

Their father Thomas Gaywood served as a captain in the Royalist army during the English Civil Wars, and was killed at the Battle of Bridgnorth in 1646.

Bridgnorth had been the main stronghold of the Royalists, and after his victory Cromwell ordered Bridgnorth Castle to be destroyed. The remaining tower leans at an angle greater than that of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

(1) Walter Noel of Hilcote at Chebsey in Staffordshire who was born in 1622 may have been related to Dorothy Noel of Hilcote in Chebsey who was married to Thomas Whitgreve 1526-1590 of Burton near Stafford, perhaps her nephew. Thomas and Dorothy Whitgreve had as son Walter Whitgreve 1573-1616 who was perhaps the father or grandfather of Thomas Whitgreve who married Margaret Eld who was born in 1647, the daughter of Francis Eld 1623-1687 and his wife nee Margaret Crompton.

(2) Walter Noel born 1622 was thrice married. His first wife was Elizabeth Gaywood whom he married in 1640. Secondly he married Hannah Unwin in 1686. His third wife was Joyce Joy of Aspeden in Hertfordshire whom he married on 22 November 1680.
By Hannah Unwin he had a son Walter Noel born in 1692, who married Elizabeth Mary Foley in 1729. She was the daughter of Paul Foley of Prestwood in Staffordshire and his wife nee Elizabeth Turton, and was baptised at Prestwood on 11 November 1707.
That Walter Noel and his wife nee Elizabeth Mary Foley had a son, another Walter Noel, who was born in about 1718 at Hilcote in Chebsey and died on 14 August 1794.
