John Edward Sharpe was born in 1824 and baptised at Doncaster on 23 January 1824. he was the son of the Reverend John Sharpe the Vicar of St George's church in Doncaster and his wife nee Sarah Falconer.
He followed a military career, and served as Captain with the 46th Bengal Native Infantry in India. He married Caroline Knox on 6 February 1844 at Barrackpore, India.
He was killed during the Indian Mutiny on 14 July 1857 at Fort Sialkote. His grave is at Sialkote and has a memorial bearing the words "In memory of Captain J.E. Sharpe 46th Regt. N.I. Died at Sealkote 14th July 1857 aged 33 years. Erected by his brother officers."
They had several children, including their eldest daughter Frances Harriet Sharpe, who married Thomas Gould of Sheffield in 1869.
