James Gregory was born in 1808 in Manchester. He became a yarn draper, and married Martha Wilkinson who was born in Manchester in 1809, and became a provision dealer.
They had the following children, all born in Manchester:
Charles Gregory 1828-1887. He married Catherine Critchley 1829-1898.
Hannah Gregory 1832-1905. She was born in 1832, and married Joseph Clare in 1849. They had two sons (Charles Clare born 1850 and Joseph Clare born 1852) and a daughter Esther Clare (born 1854), all born in Manchester. Hannah Clare died in Prestwich in 1905 aged 75 years. Her husband Joseph Clare had predeceased her in Manchester in 1868 aged only 40 years. He had been a stiffener in a dye works. Hannah Clare was a cotton weaver.
Richard Gregory. He was born in 1834, and became a builder by 1851.
Mary A. Gregory. She was born in 1842.
Grace Gregory. She was born in 1846.
Martha Gregory. She was born in 1851.
In 1851 the family were living at 68 Woodward Street in Manchester.
James Gregory died on 23 January 1859, and was buried at Ardwick Cemetery in Manchester.
When the 1861 Census was taken, his widow was living at Holland Street, Newton in Manchester with her unmarried daughters Mary A. Gregory and Grace Gregory and her unmarried sister Sarah Wilkinson, born in 1807 in Manchester and then a domestic servant. There she had a retail butcher's shop, and had taken in a boarder. Her two daughters were working as cotton winders. By 1871 Martha Gregory was living at 64 Holland Street in Newton, still with her sister but her daughters were no longer with her. In 1881 she was living at 162 Cobden Street in Manchester with her then widowed daughter Hannah Clare.
Martha Gregory died in 1889 aged 79 years at Prestwich in Lancashire.
