Herbert Adams was born in 1878 at New Mills in Derbyshire, the son of James Adams 1843-1886 and his wife nee Mary Ellen Middleton 1848-1926. He was known as Bert within the family.
In 1881 he was living at home with his parents at Stockport Road, Newtown, New Mills in Derbyshire. By 1891 his father had died and he was living aged thirteen with his uncle James Gibbs Bestwick at the Green Farm in Alstonefield, Staffordshire. With him was his elder brother Charles Adams 1869-1942 who was working on the farm aged 21. They were both still there and working on the farm when the Census was taken in 1901.
He married Harriet Ann Lamb in 1910 at St. Peter's church in Fairfield, Buxton, Derbyshire. She was born in 1874 at Round Oak in Stafford.
In 1911 they were living at 42 Fairfield Road in Buxton. Herbert Adams was then recorded as working in the building trade. Later they moved to Chapel-en-le-Frith in Derbyshire.

Herbert Adams died at Chapel-en-le-Frith in 1946 aged 68 years.
Harriet Ann Adams died there in 1956 aged 81 years.
