Charles Adams was born in 1869 at Alstonefield in Staffordshire, the eldest son of James Adams 1843-1886 and his wife née Mary Ellen Middleton 1848-1926.

His father died in a road accident when he was only 17 years old. Five years later, when the Census was taken in 1891, he was working for his uncle and aunt James Bestwick and Ellen Elizabeth Bestwick at the Green Farm in Alstonefield, and was still there in 1901 when he had been joined by his brother Herbert Adams. Both brothers however had left by 1911, although their uncle and aunt were still running the farm. It had been their intention to bequeath their farm to Charles Adams, but he had married without their approval and they disinherited him.

He married Ellen Bennington Gould 1878-1936 on 21 April 1904 at the Wesleyan Chapel in Ashbourne.

They had the following children:

Edith Mary Adams 1904-1906. She was born in 1904 at Standlow Farm in Tissington, Derbyshire, and died there in 1906.

Annie Lizzie Adams 1906-1993. She was born on 4 November 1906 at Standlow Farm, and was married to Thomas Walter Askey in 1927.

Ada Adams 1911-1989. She was born on 8 December 1911 at Parwich in Derbyshire, and was married to Edward Corden Fearn 1908-1976 in 1930.

Nellie Adams. She was born on 9 April 1915 at Parwich, and was married to Charles Jackson in 1943.

Ellen Bennington Adams died in Parwich in 1936, and was buried in Parwich churchyard.

Charles Adams died on 1 October 1942 in St. Oswald's Hospital in Ashbourne, Derbyshire, and was buried in Parwich churchyard.
