Henry Stephen Hutchinson was born in 1841 at Camden Town in London, the son of Lieut-Colonel George Hutchinson of the Bengal Engineers 1793-1852 and his second wife Elizabeth Harrington Thomason 1811-1894.
Hnery Stephen Hutchinson followed his father into the Indian Army, and attained the rank of Colonel.
On 14 September 1867 he married Evelyn Somerville Chester Rose at Murree in Bengal, India. She was born on 19 January 1850 at Simla in India, the daughter of General Hugh Rose and his wife nee Anna Maria Short. She was the sister of Annie Charlotte Rose who was married to his brother James Bird Hutchinson on 18 November 1869.
They had the following children:
Evelyn Isobel Rose Hutchinson. She was born in 1869 at Poona in India. She was married to Sir Walter Hughes in 1889 (1).
Leslie Thomason Rose Hutchinson. He was born on 19 May 1872 at Clifton near Bristol, and died in 1949 in Bournemoth, Hampshire.
Mabel Grace Rose Hutchinson. She was born in 1875 at Mahabaleshwar in India. She was married to the Reverend Norman Robert Ottiwell Gifford Bennett, the eldest son of Norman Bennett of Bennetston Hall, near Chapel-en-le-Frith in Derbyshire. He was born in 1867, educated at Uppingham School and Trinity College in Cambridge (BA 1893 MA 1897). They lived at The Parsonage, Benares in India.
In 1871 the family were living with his widowed mother Elizabeth Harrington Hutchinson at Kenwith Lodge, Redland Road, Westbury-on-Trym near Bristol. In 1881 the three children were living with their mother at 2 Elbana, Holdenhurst, Christchurch in Hampshire. Their father was absent, presumably being away on service in India.
