Florence Lydia Anderson was born on 4 January 1858 at Barningham Winter in Norfolk, the daughter of the Reverend James Richard Anderson 1824-1872 Rector of Barningham Winter and his wife née Elizabeth Julia Pellew 1827-1890.

On 16 May 1883 she was married to the Reverend Hugh Hornby Birley, son of Thomas Hornby Birley 1824-1897 and his wife née Frances Sophia Harter 1825-1864. He was born on 30 January 1859 at Somerville, Pendleton in Lancashire, and died in 1958.

He was educated at Uppingham School and Jesus College, Cambridge. As an undergraduate at Cambridge University he won an Athletics Blue in 1881 and 1882. He graduated Bachelor of Arts in 1883 and Master of Arts in 1887. He was ordained deacon in 1882 at Durham cathedral and priested there in 1883. He was successively Curate of Chester-le-Street in County Durham from 1882 to 1887, Vicar of Pelton in County Durham from 1887 to 1895, Vicar of the Church of the Venerable Bede at Gateshead from 1895 to 1901, Vicar of St Paul's, West Hartlepool from 1901 to 1908, and Rector of Croxdale near Durham from 1909 to 1919. In retirement he was licensed to preach in the Diocese of of Coventry from 1925 to 1932 and in the Diocese of Chichester (Sussex) from 1932 to 1934 (1).

They had the following children:

Phyllis Mary Birley. She was born on 21 January 1885 at Chester-le-Street. She was married to Hubert Pearson Hustler Austen 1878-1956.

Hilda Frances Birley. She was born on 18 April 1888 at Pendleton, and died unmarried on 3 January 1932 at Warwick.

Norman Pellew Birley. He was born on 29 April 1891 at Pelton. In 1910 he married Eileen Alice Morgan 1895-1988, and died in 1980 at Swindon, Wiltshire.

Their mother Florence Lydia Birley née Anderson died on 25 April 1924 at Leamington Spa in Warwickshire.

Her Will was proved on 24 June 1924 (2).

On 20 July 1932 the Reverend Hugh Hornby Birley married Marjorie Boultbee at Cheltenham in Gloucestershire. She was born on 24 August 1888 at Cheltenham.

He retired to live at 163 Heene Road, Worthing in Sussex (3) where he died on 28 September 1939.

His Will was proved on 4 December 1939 (4).

His widow Marjorie Birley nee Boultbee died on 29 January 1951 at Alton in Hampshire. Her Will was proved on 9 May 1951 (5).
