Nat Gould

Elizabeth Waterhouse Beardmore 1869-1932

Elizabeth Waterhouse Beardmore was born in 1869, the daughter of Ralph Beardmore of Stanshope Hall at Alstonefield in Staffordshire and his wife née Mary Elizabeth Waterhouse. He was born on 19 December 1833 at Alstonefield and died on 22 January 1910. Her mother was born on 8 June 1837 at Mottram-in-Longdendale in Cheshire and died on 4 January 1915 at Ashbourne in Derbyshire.

In 1881 she was 12 years old and visiting the home of Alfred Tinker and his older unmarried sisters at 43 Marshall Place in Cheetham, Manchester, all born at Mottram-in-Longdendale. He was a commercial traveller in the tea trade, and a bachelor. His sisters Esther and Mary Tinker were school teachers. The Tinker family may have been related to Elizabeth's mother, or the connection may have been through the tea firm Nathaniel Gould and Company, founded by Nathaniel Gould 1824-1874, the father of Nat Gould.

By 1891 she was a teacher at the City of Durham School.

In 1893 she married Gilbert Gould, born at Pilsbury Grange on 25 October 1864, the son of Gilbert Gould 1821-1891 (the brother of Nathaniel Gould 1824-1874) the father of Nat Gould.

They had the following children:

Gilbert Nathaniel Gould. He was born in 1894 at Sudbury in Derbyshire. When the Census was taken in 1911 he was working with his father on their farm, but in 1914 he emigrated to Australia (1). By 1924 he was a shearer living at 44a Stanley Street, Richmond, Yarra, Victoria, Australia (2).

Ruth Ellinor Gould. She was born 4 July 1895 at Sudbury, and was married in 1919 to Thomas Charles Bertram Jarrett (1891-1997). She died on 29 February 1964 in Adelaide, South Australia (3).

Bessie Lilian Gould. She was born 15 June 1902 at Willington. In 1911 she was a boarder aged eight with her brothers Cyril Donald Gould and Victor Leopold Gould at the school of Miss Ellen Partrige at West View, Alstonefield in Staffordshire, one of five boarders there (4). She was married to John James Colwell in 1924 (5). After John James Colwell died, Bessie Lilian Gould married Jack Sherratt. She died in 1983 at Southend-on-Sea in Essex.

Cyril Donald Gould. He was born in 1904 at Willington. In 1911 he was a boarder aged seven with his sister Bessie Lilian Gould and brother Victor Leopold Gould at the school of Miss Ellen Partrige at West View in Alstonefield. He emigrated to Australia in 1926 on board SS Berrima, departing on 22 July 1926 for Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. He had then been a farmer aged 22 living at 15 Mayfield Grove, Long Eaton in Nottinghamshire (6). He died on 6 November 1958 in South Australia (7).

Victor Leopold Gould. He was born in 1905 at Willington. In 1911 he was a boarder aged six with his sister Bessie Lilian Gould and brother Cyril Donald Gould at the school of Miss Ellen Partrige at West View in Alstonefield. He died in London in 1960 aged 54 years.

Bernard Ralph Gould. He was born on 28 July 1907 at Willington in Derbyshire, and died in North Yorkshire in 1984 aged 77 years. He was a furniture salesman.

Roy Edmund Gould. He was born 18 March 1909 at Willington, and died in 1997 at Trowbridge in Wiltshire. He was a publisher's agent.

By 1901 Gilbert Gould was farming at the Acacia Farm in Willington near Repton in Derbyshire, and was still there in 1911. He renamed it Pilsbury House Farm, and it is now called Pilsbury House (8).

He was a party to the Hanson Mount Agreement dated 1 May 1911.

His wife Elizabeth Gould née Beardmore died on 4 December 1932 aged 64 years, and was buried at Bradbourne in Derbyshire.

Gilbert Gould died on 10 March 1948 (9) aged 83 years, and was buried at Bradbourne in Derbyshire (10).

(4) Miss Ellen Partige had been with her mother nee Elizabeth Waterhouse Beardmore 1869-1932 when she was a child at Stanshope Hall near Alstonefield.
(5) Bessie Lilian Colwell née Gould and her husband John James Colwell had two sons, John Noel Colwell 1924-2000 and Barry Colwell. Known as Jack, John James Colwell was born in 1903 at Snelston in Derbyshire, the son of John Thomas Colwell, a hotel proprietor, and his wife nee Frances Streather. In 1911 his father kept the George and Dragon Hotel in Ashbourne, Derbyshire.

(8) The address of the farm is mentioned in Kelly's Directories as Harehill under the Sudbury entry. In the 1895 and 1899 Directories appears "Gould Gilbert, farmer, Harehill". He figures in 19th Century newspaper reports as attending shows and sales with cattle and Shire horses, his address being always given as Sudbury except one which gives his address as "Harehill Sudbury". The particular farm is not mentioned however.
Harehill is a hamlet lying west of Boylestone between there and the Sudbury to Ashbourne road. It includes a farm named Harehill. Further to the west is Harehill Park Farm and then Harehill Farm. It is not known which of these was Gilbert Gould's farm.
