Charles Bennett was born on 5 June 1835 in Chapel-en-le-Frith in Derbyshire, the son of William Bennett 1797-1879 and his wife Ernestina Mary von Schultz 1801-1865.
His father was a solicitor and attorney, but instead of follwing him into the legal profession he became a medical doctor.
It is unknown where he resided in 1851, but by 1861 he was a medical student at Edinburgh University visiting the Wilkie family at Easter Bush House, Glencorse in Midlothian.
Living there were Catherine Wilkie (nee Keir) the widow of James Wilkie. and her daughters Jane Wilkie (who later was married to Francis Grey Bennett 1830-1863) and Joanna Bathia Wilkie.
Charles John Bennett married Joanna Bathia Wilkie in Edinburgh on 22 February 1865. By 1871 the couple were living at 10 Hardwick Street, Buxton in Derbyshire, where he was a general practitioner and and surgeon.
They had no children.
Charles Bennett died on 13 July 1917, leaving his estate to his wife (1).
His widow Joanna Bathia Bennett nee Wilkie moved to 1 York Road, Tunbridge Wells in Kent. She died on 22 January 1922, leaving her estate to her nephew, Frances Grey Bennett, surgeon (2).
