William Pichott Gould was born in May 1855 in Manchester, the son of Nathaniel Gould 1824-1874 and his wife nee Mary Wright 1827-1897.

His parents came from Derbyshire country families. His father, Nathaniel Gould 1824-1874, was a son of a family based for centuries at Pilsbury Grange near Hartington. His mother, born Mary Wright 1827-1897, came from another yeoman family long established in Bradbourne.

William Pichott Gould died in 1857. He was buried in the churchyard of St. Mary the Virgin, Prestwich near his Manchester home at York Street in Cheetham on 9 February 1857 aged one year and nine months.

Of the three sons of his parents, his brother Nat Gould was the only survivor to adulthood. William Pichott Gould and his other brother sadly died in infancy, and were buried at Prestwich. Their names are however commemorated on the gravestone of their mother at Bradbourne.
