The Will of John Grindon who died in 1746.
"In the Name of God Amen I John Grindon of Asholme in the Parish of Alstonefield and County of Stafford Yeoman being in an infirm and declining State of Body But of a Sound perfect and Disposing Mind and Memory praised be God for the Same Do make Ordain and constitute this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form following. And First and principally I recommend my Soul into the Hands of Almighty God hoping through the merits and Mediation of my ever blessed Saviour to obtain perfect Remission and Forgiveness of all my Sins And my Body I commit to Earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executrixes herein after named. And as to the Worldly Estate which it hath pleased Almighty God to bless me with I give and dispose of the Same as followeth. And First it is my Will and mind and I do hereby Direct and appoint That all my Messuages Lands Tenements and Hereditaments whatsoever lying and being within the Lordship of Butterton and Parish of Grindon in the said County of Stafford or either of them with their and every of their Rights Members and Appurtenances be held and enjoyed and that the Rents Issues and Profits thereof And every part of them be from and immediately after my Decease Yearly and every Year had received and taken by my Dear and loving Wife Ann Grindon and her Assigns to her own Use during the Term of her natural Life without Impeachment of Wast for her Joynture and in Lieu Barr and full recompense of her Dower. Also I do hereby give and bequeath to my said loving Wife Ann Grindon the Bedstead and bed standing in the Chamber over the House with all the Bed Cloathes thereto belonging, And also one Cow which she shall please to make choice of out of those which I shall happen to die possessed of And I do hereby give and devise the Reversion of all the aforesaid Lands and Hereditaments before by me devised to to [sic] my said Wife during her natural Life together with all other my Messuages and Lands Tythes Tenements and Hereditaments whatsoever and wheresoever within the Kingdom of England with all their and every of their Rights Members and Appurtenances To my three Daughters Ann (Wife of Thomas Salt) Elizabeth Grindon and Mary Grindon And to the Several and respective Heirs of their several and respective Body and Bodies share and share alike to be held by them and enjoyed as Tenants in common and not as Joynt Tenants. Also I further give and bequeath to my two youngest Daughters Elizabeth Grindon and Mary Grindon each of them one Bedstead and Bed with Bed clothes and Hangings thereto belonging and standing in the chamber over the Parlour and likewise each of them one Chest, and also each of them two Ewes and two Lambs Which they shall please to make choice of, My eldest Daughter Ann (Wife of Thomas Salt) having before received one Bed one Chest and the same Quantity of Sheep And also the rest and residue of my ready money and money placed out on Security Houshold goods Quick Stock and Husbandry Ware And also all other Personall Estate before by me not disposed of which I shall die intitled to (after my Just Debts Funerall Expences and charges in proving this my Last Will are all thereout first paid satisfyed and deducted) I give and bequeath to my said three Daughters Ann the Wife of Thomas Salt Elizabeth Grindon and Mary Grindon to be divided amongst them as near as it is possible Share and Share alike And I do hereby constitute & appoint my said three Daughters Executrixes of this my last Will and Testament hereby revoking and making void all former and other Wills by me at any Time heretofore made And do constitute and appoint this and no other to be my Last. In Witness whereof I the said John Grindon have to this my last Will and Testament set my Hand and Seal this Twenty Sixth Day of February in the Sixteenth Year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Second by the Grace of God of Great Britain France and Ireland King Defender of the Faith and so forth and in the Year of our Lord 1742
